lol... well there are good ideas and bad ones..... i know that there isnt much room in the doors of our cars becuz i had to take mine aprt once to fix the latch. any decent 6.5" speaker will have a nice size magnet on it and i kno mine would stop the window from rolling down if i put mine there. also you are asking for rattles

I wish he'd share.
Dope or not, he's right that the kick would be a better place to mount the speakers (from a sound stage point of view). But it is your car and your choice.

maybe he's mounting some lightning audio 6's or something... he'll have plenty of room then, and won't have to worry about vibrations.... what, those are like 10watts RMS?

If you have crank windows, you can fit 6.5s in the front corner of the door. If you have power windows, the window motor is there, making it necessary to build out the door the full depth of the woofer. I find that not only does this look incredibly stupid and encroach on an already confined area, but it doesn't sound good enough to be worth the effort.

I've got 6.5 Kappa Perfects installed in my doors.

At the time, the guy selling kicks on the boards here had gone to Iraq, so I had the door pods installed by a local shop. (They would have charged twice as much for kicks. )

I can't say how they sound compared to kicks, but they definitely have shaken things loose in the doors. :P (Have to go in and tighten things up at some point.)

The flat covering was something they threw on quickly because a bit of the speaker cover would hit they trim at the bottom of the door, because the speaker had to sit so low.

I bet there isn't much room in there for those suckers to breathe!

Also, I wonder how they got those to fit so well, you have power windows, right?

Yup, power windows. The speakers sit really low in the doors, but aside from that I haven't poked around too much. I'll take some pics whenever I get around to taking the door panel off to fix the rattles and such though.

hrm I guess that might be one thing to consider... my doors rattle enough as it is... I wouldn't want speakers there making more annoying sounds... But I guess if you can't afford/can't find kickpods, then you go with the next best thing, right?

If I were doing it again now, I'd wait and see how Jim makes out with selling his kicks. (Still tossing around the idea of getting a set anyway.)

I can't decide if I would lose too much precious leg room by having those kicks...

I'm already spoiled, as I've removed my broken cupholders... which did free up quite a bit of space...

That would be my big concern with going with kicks as well. I know reznor's(?) kicks seemed to be pretty good for space. Q-Logics are horrible from pics I've seen. Jim's look nice, but because of the angle, I can't really tell how far they come out. (Maybe he can post a pic?)

BTW, don't take my comment above to mean that i'm unhappy with the speakers in the doors. I just want to try kicks to see what kind of difference there is. And I think it makes for a nicer install.

what would you do if you ditched the door 6.5 for some kicks? would you put some midbass in there or what? That would be awesome to have 3-way components

Not sure what I'd do. If I was happy with just the kicks, I'd probably just put the doors back to normal. The pockets that were there were convenient to have.

you would just place the pockets right over the holes that they made for your 6.5's in the doors?

I'd probably try and score new door panels in decent condition and sell the ones I have.

how would you compare the sound of the speakers in your doors to other vehicles that have them in kick panels?? not necessarily in a 3rd gen...

I've personally never had the chance to hear speakers in kicks yet. Which is one reason I'm curious to try it out. But getting kicks is just an idea I'm toying around with.

today is the day

alright guys i know that everyone is talking about their systems and what they can and cant put in well today is the day im gonna put brand new alpine 6 x 9 in the back and brand new 2 3/4in deep alpine 6.5's and tweets in the door and gonna connect them to a 4 channel alpine amp. the system is gonna kick and hopefully ill get some pics of how it will all look when im done. oh yeah and just for kicks im gonna keep my old rockford fosgate 6 x9 that were in the back and put them in boxes and put them behind my back seat. so basicly i should go deaf after a few weeks. write back with any thoughts.:)

erm if I were going to keep the rockford 6x9's... I'd put 'em in boxes, cross them over for ONLY bass... and toss them in the rear hatch area... perferrably on the rear shelf, reflecting off the class in some form or fashion... because I see no point in putting them in the actual back seat, with new good 6x9's so close to them... what do you guys think?

plus I would make sure I eliminated ALL of the highs from the rockfords, otherwise you will have very conflicting sound

but the bottom line is try it, since it's not like those boxes are going to be bolted to your back seat, you can easily move them around and see where the "sweet spot" is...

plus... have you considered buying/making kickpanel enclosures instead of butchering your doors?

peace

-Steve

I'm all for putting them in the doors. You could mount 6.5's under the seat and they will sound better than 4x6's reflecting of glass. I have owned several cars with speakers in the doors and have never been dissapointed. Everyone has an opinion and mine is that kick pods are over priced and still look like a band-aid solution.

Good idea mounting the tweets high, they'll give you all the imaging u need.

that is the ONE thing I like about them being in the doors... you can really project the sound when they're open...
