Ill Effects of incorrect gauge wire

Other than a the obvious fire hazard. Is there any performance loss.

For example, using an 8 gauge wire, where the proper wire is a 4 gauge.

it'll become a bottleneck for current in that it cannot supply the needed amount through the small sized wire...but yeah Fire is a big one too worry about, do you really need more reason

To small a power wire WILL cause the power supply in your amp to die pre-maturely.

Is it possible to use a guage that would be too large? Say the aplication calls for 8guage wire and you drop in 4 guage. will this cause an issue?

nope other than your amps power and ground terminals might not accept that big of wire

Well I am gonna be running both 1000 watt amps in my T/A. I plan on putting 4guage wire from the bat back to my amps and then using a distribution block and using 8 guage wire to go from the distro box to my amps and then using 4 guage from the amps to the grounds...I think that will work. The wires won't be long between the amp and the block.

Axle/Gears: I should know this
Wire Gauge Current Flow Max Total Amp Power
Class AB (60% eff) Max Total Amp Power
Class D (75% eff)

8 awg 52 amps "430 watts" 537 watts

Does that mean my amp will only be able to make 430 watts max if 8 gauge power wire is run to it?

4 awg 131 amps "1084 watts" 1355 watts

If thats the case then i am starving my amp of power.

I would not run 2 1000 watt amps off of 4AWG, I would use at least 2AWG...
