equalizer q's
Got a a couple questions about equalizers. My head unit (alipine) only has single bass and treble adjustments and I'd like to be able to tune individual frequencies so I thought about getting an equalizer. Right now I have my subs and 6x9's running off of my 4 channel amp. If I wanted to be able to adjust the 6x9's and the subs, would I need a 2 or 4 channel EQ? I've seen EQ's with two channels and a seperate sub output. Would this do what I need? Also, I've seen them with wattage ratings, like 150w or 300w output. Is this if they're used without an amplifier? I've been looking at the clarion eqs744 [URL=http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13733] It's got 6 channel outputs and sub controls. Would this do what I want?
Sorry for the ignorance, but I'm new to the stereo scene
Thanx.
Alpine 1.5 din HU, kenwood 220w 3 channel 6x9's, 2 Orion XTR 12's, Orion Cobalt 200.4 amp (runs 6x9's and XTR's)

IMO an EQ is never a bad idea.
if you're looking into clarion, I don't have much to say for or against it, but it's probably just fine. stay away from cheapies..they will just add noise and not last long.
I've heard that all EQs add noise...maybee so, but choose the lesser of the evils: a little barley audible noise or grossly out of tune music with clipping or muffled sounds across the frequency band.
Wattage rating = nothing
don't power your system off of a EQ, you just don't need to. unless you want to try it on your front speakers....you have nothing to lose.
as for the amp, what are your inputs? do you have two seperate inputs (not L and R but seperate pairs) if so, then an EQ with two outputs can be benificial in controling the sub levels.
also, some EQ have poorly selected frequencies, but it's an induvidual thing. I need a minimum of 7 bands myself and I prefer at least a 60 Hz or lower and several in the bass ranges..100Hz, 180Hz, etc.. also, Db level (i.e. -12dB-0-+12dB) will provide better range of adjustment than -6-0+6, just throwing some numbers out there, just to point out that each band can be adjusted at different levels.
I seriously believe an EQ is a must for home audio, cassete players, messed up downloaded Kazaa .mp3s ect. Some of todays HU's make them about obsolete in automobiles. Unless you really like your HU, you should look into a new Pioneer DEH-something model, or Alpine for about the same price as a good EQ.
Ok, I just noticed you have an Alpine, just keep it, nothing like a good old school Alpine!
