Salesguy- right or wrong?

Hey, I went into Visions today to do my insurance claim, and asked the Car Audio Manager (who was processing my claim) what subs he would recommend putting in my Camaro. I didn't ask brands, just what size. Anyways, he said a 12" in a ported box... I have been under the impression that an enclosed sub (when designed for an enclosed box, such as an Alpine Type S) would pound much better than a sub in a ported box.

I was planning on buying probably 1 12" MTX Thunder (not 100% sure on what to get yet) and building an enclosed box. So what's your guys' opinion/thoughts?

if you want louder bass do a ported box, (which is a lot harder to get perfect, cause you need the right volume, length of ports and port freqs, plus you need a bigger box, whihc in our cars space is of the essence) if you go sealed box you will get tighter more SQ type bass

sealed boxes dont always have better SQ

it really depends what particular sub you buy, if you want ported or sealed. Some subs are designed for ported use only.

designing a good ported box is much harder than the actual construction of the box.

there's no replacement for displacement is a common term in racing but its also true in stereos...a bigger subwoofer will get louder than a smaller one so if thats what you're after you could even look into getting a single 15. But each sub requires different airspace, so you'll need a sub that doesnt need very much volume to perform.

what brands does visions carry?

I did my insurance claim, and it turns out I didn't get 200 dollars to spend on an amp like I had thought, I ended up with my previous one (a Kenwood 350W). For a head unit I chose the Pioneer DEH-P6500, got sub woofer control and all that kinda stuff. Anyways, the guy there suggested a Kicker Comp 12" the entry level one, because a bigger sub will command more power, and my Kenwood amp can't produce gobs of it. I'm not competing, just want a lil' thump when I throw in a rap song and some punch when I listen to Metallica or AC/DC. I'm gonna go with an enclosed box sub, a 12" more than likely, and build it into my well.

Also, what size of gauge should I buy to wire the sub up? I really don't want to screw the gauge size up after spending a few hundred dollars.

Thanks everyone

the bigger the better, stick to 0/1 or even 4 gauge. It will be a less of a pain later when u decide to upgrade

i would say go with 4 gauge...it will leave your options open for adding another amp down the road

are you making your own box or getting a shop to do it?

I'm going to make my own box. Leaning towards t he MTX Thunder 12"... due to my amp. Any other suggestions on good sounding amps that don't cost an arm and a leg. Looking to spend less than 200 dollars on a 12... around 200 would be okay, i guess. Really want to be under it, though.

I would pick the kicker comp or comp VR over MTX. I have owned both and thought the kicker VR had a little better low end.

if you're able to buy online you should have no problem with that price range

look into subs by:
adire- http://www.adireaudio.com
RE-http://www.respl.com
ED-http://www.edesignaudio.com
CV-http://www.cerwinvega.com

out of those i havent worked with ED products as of yet, but i hear they're excellent.

You could go with an adire shiva for $125 but it needs a fairly big box. RE's SE line is very good for SPL while still maintaining good SQ. It sounds good in just about every box i put it in.

Just one comment on the cerwin vega subs....

... I love the sound of cerwin vega subs, but the enclosures are absolutely HUGE for their "Vega" series subs. 2.5 cubes for a single 12" is hard to fit into the interior of a thirdgen.

I used to own a 12" Cerwin Vaga Stealth series,,, It was older paper cone one but i loved that sub till i wore it out and took it apart to see what happened to it. Wish i had two of those instead of my IMPP pioneers i got now.

I still have a pair of 12" 3-way CV home speakers that I got for christmas back in 1992. I've DJ'd with them ever since, and use them in my bedroom inbetween. They are sloppy, the mids suck, and the original piezo tweets were miserable sounding, but after stuffing a pair of Audax domes in the boxes, they make a great pair of party speakers. They absolutely HAMMER!

What wire are you asking about? The amp to the battery, or the amp to the sub? If amp to sub, go with 12 or 14 gauge... I have 12 gauge Monster wire going to my subs.

When you're after a sub, also check out the frequency response... I'd rather have a sub rated from 22-150 than a sub rated for 40-200 Hz!
