Batting in a Sub enclosure
The sub enclosure I purchased for temporary use (until I build a proper one) had some batting included. Should this actually be installed inside the enclosure????? Everything I have been reading on this site indicates that you need a very hard surface for sound reflection. The batting would tend to have the opposite effect.
What's the board's opinion on this???? I want to build a good box so I need help with this issue....

use it...
if you are useing a small sealed box, i say use it most definantly!
the batting usually refered to as sound deadener, it slows the sound down and absorbs it, in a sealed enclosure this is good.
the point of a seal enclosure is to stop half the sound of a subwoofer(it makes sound go in both directions this is why ported boxes are loud in most cases) the sealed off area stops the vibrations of the sound going out of the rear of the sub, this is important because if there was no box you wouldnt hear much becausethe vibrations would tend to cancel each other out no vibrations means no sound, makeing sealed boxes easy simple ways to use a subwoofer.
also the batting stuff can have another effect, it can make the box seem bigger than it really is, some speakers require a larger amount of air space than other to sound their best, so by adding this deader to a small box it theorticly add air space to the box.
you may not care about all this stuff but if it is a sealed box i think you should use the batting inside the box it will help out even if only a little bit, also save it for you other box if that is also sealed.
hope you got what you needed.

Thanks for the info!!!!!! Since the future box I intend to build for my single 10" Type R is going to fit in the lower portion of the well only, I think I will install batting in it as well.
If I should decide to go to dual 12's down the road I will build a box to use the whole well and probably shouldn't need the batting.

if you still got it use it man
if you have the batting then i would say use it, it may not make alot of difference but it wont hurt at all and you already have it so i say just keep it in every box you make, imo it is something id use in all my boxes, but its just preference in larger boxes, i put some in a small box for a sony ten and its sound good granted its a sony...
