Aluminum cone subs and competing with them Professional help Please!

Hi all, haven't posted in a while...but I am getting ready for my first competition and I'm hella excited but a few people are telling me that my Aluminum cone sub wont read on a dB meter because the cone is aluminum. They told me that although they hit and sound really loud, they give a "false" reading or something like that and dont read as high as they should...is there any truth in this? does the aluminum cone absorb the SPL or somethin like that? Im just trying to get a few more opinions before I believe them...I just dont see how the cone type effects SPL reading. I need as professional opinion as I can get so anyone who works at an istall shop or if you or a fam member works for Eclipse That would be gggrrreeaaatttt....thanx alot!

slap those people...old meters went off SPL, or sound pressure level....the air movement off the cones, and the new Termlab meters are off PSI...so go slap those poeple. The reason people use aluminum cones is for weight and cone flex, or the lack of.

So does it matter if we are using an older meter that goes by SPL?

Well, I ended up with 5th place at 148.3 dB. When I got my 1200.1 it blew that type R like it was nuthin so the audio store suggested I upgrade to Eclipse. So far I am very pleased with Eclipse. The winning dB for my class (1-2 subs small, which was any one sub up to 15", or 2 12" or less) was 155.x with a single 15" DD on 2 memphis mojo amps. Second was 152.5 with 2 12" subs and 3rd was 152.0 with one Kicker Comp vr2 on a Planet audio 1200 watt amp. I as pretty impressed. They also had a truck there that was bagged, flamed, and had 28 Memphis 10" subs in the cab runnin off 7 1000D memphis amps. It hit 160.1 w/ one blown sub. It was a good comp over all and now that I know what I am hitting I can work on improving. Before the comp I brown breaded the trunk of my car, added a 1.5 farad cap, and set the EQ on my cd player. That brown bread stuff is pretty amazing, it eliminated all my rattles except my gas tank lid and bumper. My license plate is even pretty much rattle free . It definately made it a little louder inside...I can't wait till I can really tear into my car and layer the whole thing w/ that stuff. Other than that, I was pleased w/ my results and can't wait till it gets louder .

Are you still using that same box or did you build another for the eclipse?

ya, it barely fit into the same box...I actually had to pull out the back panel that covers the trunk motor so the sub wouldn't slap it. The sub has so much excursion that it would slap the panel and make a nasty popping noise. So right now I have no back panel in there and need to build myself a new box so the sub will face up that way I can put that panel back in. I think I have some pictures of it on my other computer...I'll have to look next time I use it.

Thats cool. You should do a tad better when you get a different box because there will be less flex. If you dont mind me asking, how much did that sub run you? I have looked at them before and now that I know what kind of numbers they are putting out.....hmmm.
Thanks
Brian

That sub is $370 w/o tax, but I got it for $300 at the local audio store. I have saved like $715 thru this store, they are great at giving me deals. The one I have is a 4 ohm model so the JBL is only giving it about 6-7 hundred watts RMS w/ the amp turned all the way up on everything. I am getting a DVC model so I can wire it down to 2 ohms and give the sub the full 1200 watts RMS, hopefully before the next comp on Oct 11th. I'll let ya know what happens at that one and what this sub does at 2 ohms. Im hoping to hit 150 or so w/ it once it gets down to 2 ohms or so. I forgot to mention that during the comp my cap actually dropped to 8 or 9 on the digital display, even when I gave it some gas and rapped it up to like 2000 or 2500 RPM.

Well, I thought I would update this post real quick and let ya'll know that I now have 2 DVC Eclipse Aluminum Cone subs running off a Planet Audio 1250x1 @ 1 ohm. The JBL couldn't handle both of them at 1 ohm for some reason so since I now work at a car audio store I get to play w/ all the equipment there . We also went overkill and used 8 ga. speaker wire, and the subs now face up instead of to the rear like the single one did. I now also need a bigger cap, as the 1.5 farad cap can't handle the amp. And Planet Audio's in-****ing-credible 36dB bass boost remote makes the subs move and hit like a *****. There is another comp this weekend that I am entering so I will let ya'll know how things go with this new setup and I will get pictures (and maybe video )as soon as I get things cleaned up a bit. Oh, by the way, I now have a JBL 1200.1 for sale, and would like to get $275 for it but make me an offer and I'll see what we can work out. That should cover this update, so if anyone has and questions, let me know please .

Have you done anything to improve the "hold down" capability of the rear hatch. It seems like this would be a weakness in competing with a third-gen.

Thank ***, someone who finally knows what they're doing and doesnt go ..yea man i got a 1000000 watt lanzar amp

I really am interested to hear what else u got running with those subs and amp....with that much power some sound deadening material im willing to bet will increase your dbl a little bit more....are you set up for sound quality or spl? That combination should be pretty good...i never actually heard a planet audio amp but im told they're pretty decent for the price...be careful that bass boost on that amp doesnt cause distortion..you wont be able to get as loud and you'll risk blowing the speakers.

I have done a little sound deadening, specifically under the rear panel and on the hatch. It's hard to start something that takes more than a day to do because this is my only vehicle. This summer I will have a crotch rocket to take to work so I will be able to really tear into the car and sound deaden the entire car. It is set up for spl, but I worry bout my highs and mids as well. I have boston accoustic 4x6's and 6x9's, and a clarion 100x4 running those. We are getting ready to switch it to a planet audio 100x4 so the amps match, and as soon as the TT2250D comes in, we will start to built **** covers (amp racks). I never thought of loosing dB w/ the bass boost...they don't distort, but I will look into that and see if turning it down some actually gains me some. As soon as I get the digital camera charged up i will snap some pics...I promise!
