Gain Control Switch

In my 87 T/A I have a gain control switch and it doesn't do anything. I have a sony aftermarket stereo, what does the gain switch do, and can I hook it up to work.
Thanks

Car: Trans am
hey red rider , the gain will not work unless you have the amp hooked up to it. let me explain, i have an 85 trans am with the uq7 subwoofer option, and the gain controls the i think the are 5" speakers, i know their a wierd size.the uq7 option gave you 6 speakers and an amp, its locked on the passenger size under the dash.i have a sony deck and 4 speakers now, and the gain doesnt work, i dont know if its possible to hook a new amp up to it , but anything is possible, how this helps you and if you have anymore questions email me at ramairetransam@yahoo.com

i don't have a car w/ the UQ7, but i'd assume that it probably has a 4 pin or 6 pin input connector (4pins = L± , R ±, 6 adds power ± similar to a 'remote switch'). you could probably hook up the subwoofer output or pre-out of an aftermarket stereo to them, and either use the factory speakers, or run the amp's output to a small sub in the back of the car. (in my convertible, where space it at a premium, i made up a small box/amp mount for a 6.5" DVC subwoofer that fits in the tiny shelf on the left side of the conv tunk, which actually makes a surprising improvement in low frequency response. (the stock sized speakers are 5 1/4" in the rear, i think they're fosgate or something, they were there when i bought the car, but they die out below 80hz). anyway, i think my amp is probably set for about 40-50 watts, and the stock UQ7 amp was 30W.
