watts to speaker question

can i put 2 6X9's rated at 60w and 2 4" rated at 35w on a 50w X 4 head unit? would the 4" be over powered and the 6X9's be under powered? if so what could i do to fix it? thanks alot

The power ratings on the speaker are not the amount of power it takes away from your head unit, it is the maximum power handling of your speakers (what they can take for extended periods of time).

The 50x4 power rating on your stereo is peak power, not constant power.

I'd say you'll be just fine. If one set is too loud, adjust the fade until it sounds appropriate.

thanks alot, now i have one more question. ummm if i just ran one speaker off of the 50w X 4 head unit how many watts would be going to that speaker, 50 or 200?

and it would be bad to put a 50w speaker on a 300w amp if the controlls on the amp werent set to tune down the power to the one speaker?

(ohya i'm not doing any of this, i know it would be stupid to do, i'm just trying to learn more about all of this before i start hooking things up and end up blowing something)

It would be getting 50 watts peak... that's why they say 50x4. If the one speaker was getting 200 watts then your deck would be a 200x1. The "4" in 50x4 is 4 "channels"... front right and left and rear right and left. 50 watts to each channel, 200 watts total.

As for the speaker/amp question... well that all depends on the setup. I've noticed that speakers are modestly rated... in that they can handle a little more than they say they can but are underrated so that people aren't blowing them all the time. (That could just be me though). And if you've got a 300w amp that is four channels, each channel puts out 75w. Then you have the resistance of the speaker itself, and if you have a 4 ohm speaker... get the picture?

So most likely it could handle it.

I once used a 600w, 4 channel amp to power 2 10" subs and 2 front components that could handle something like 25w or 40w or something like that. Worked fine for me.
