Theater sound quality is the worst. They use big PA systems, like the kind you might see at a concert, and they aren't really meant to be perfectly accurate. It's next to impossible anyway, with such a wide open space. It depends on the theater of course, but they probably run a few rack-mount amps at 400 watts each. It depends on the number of speakers that are used in the theater.

Well my "movie theater"

It has Kenwood 6x9's and some alpine speakers under the front dash............Along with 4 10's to provide the bass for action scenes.............It's pushing about 1,200 watts.........(1,000 watt amp, 50x4 cd player)

It's even got nice cold A/C and your own personal Leather recliner seat........

Definitely depends on the theater.

Our Danbarry "Dollar Saver" cinema SUCKS for sound quality (but ya can't complain for 2 bucks a show, a buck fifty on Tuesdays). But our Showcase Cinemas around the corner sounds pretty good, and our Regal Cinemas by the mall is even better.

Thing I hate about our Dollar Saver cinema is that they don't CRANK IT UP.

Car: too many ...
One of the things movie theaters have that cars dont is a digital sound processor. It uses the DSP to produce accurate surround sound in whatever format they choose (THX, Dobly Digital, Etc). You can purchase a DSP for your car but I dont think it would help make your music sound any better. The only cars I ever see with DSP's are the show cars with full DVD video systems. They use the DSP to produce accurate surround sound for movies in the car. Usually people buy DSP's for their home audio. I think the equivilent for a car would be your EQ. Getting a really good EQ can help you fine tune your audio for your specific car and speaker sets.

FYI, DSP simply means digital signal processing and is used in nearly all of the stuff that is made today. Instead of using op amps and other analog devices to perform 'changes' to the signal you use logic gates (and nand or nor not, etc). The PROM in your car is a perfect example of DSP.

I don't think you really understand what the processors for surround sound do, they are in no way similar to an EQ (other than they may both use digital circuitry).

Ok, well please elighten us then. I was referring to DSP as in the piece Redbird posted. 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL/DTS/PRO LOGIC II AUDIO PROCESSOR for reproducing theater quality surround sound in your car. I dont know what the audio/video world standards are, but I call those DSP's. Maybe in other parts of the world DSP means digital signal processing, but I meant Digital Sound Processor. Different stuff. And yes I do believe that the equivilent of a DSP for car audio (not movies in your car) would be your EQ, because like a DSP, you can use your EQ to better fine tune how the audio is reproduced in your speakers. I'm not saying they are related. I'm saying that in terms of usability. The difference is that the DSP does it automatically for a pre-set soundstage, and the EQ needs to be done manually for whatever you have in your car.

As long as it says 24 bit and the word surrond I would be happy. I just got the 24 bit extigy sound blasted and DAMN! what a difference. Just about a grand worth of studio monitors and I'll be set.

haha, no, "7 days" is from the movie The Ring as mentioned above. If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Im an assistant manager at a movie theatre,
trust me, its just a bunch of large speakers on the ceiling, like a PA system
although our old maintainence guy took some of the speakers out of a theatre and put one of the speaker assemblies in the back of his car...considering he got it for free, it wasnt that bad
