Best Sub & Amp Combo
I know very little about car audio. I want to go with a single sub mounted in the drivers side trunk area. What is a good Sub and Amp to go with? What brand? I just need something that has good bass. Oh and what size of Sub will fit in the trunk? Is it easy to do buy yourself?

That's a pretty vauge question to get much response but I'll start. There are tons of companies that would offer you a good sub and amp combo to go with. You should hit up some local shops and listen to some stuff. Tell them what type of music you mostly listen to and maybe bring some CD's you are familiar with to find a sub that will make you happy. I'd also make sure they play it through an amp that is comparable to something you will buy. A sub played with 200 more watts then you'll have will sound much better than what you end up with in your car.
As for building the box it probably won't be that hard if you break out your ruler and take some measurments. I know you could fit a 12 or 10 easily so is what I'd do is go listen to some subs, find one you like, and design the box with the specific recomendations from the subs manufacturer in mind.
Just remember you get what you pay for. Buy crap now and you'll end up throwing it in a dumpster eventually to get something you should've bought in the first place.

also, dont buy the first thing that they show you and say that you "need". If you are not looking for earth shaking bass then you dont need to empty your bank account on a system. I have an acoustic 10" powered by a 200watt pioneer. Together they cost about $170 new. I want more bass but it is an ok setup for now.

I agree, you do get what you pay for. But ultimately, you are the one who's going tomake the final decision. So, go with whatever sounds good to you. Don't get influenced by what other people say about other brands such as sony. Cheap is cheap no matter if the label says sony or alpine or kenwood etc.

I am not saying to just go out and buy cheap ****. I had the 10 from when I was in High school, and I wasnt willing to spend the money(mainly my wife) for a nice system, so for now(while she drives it also) it does the job. It will change your heart beat if the right song is on. Just buy what you need, maybe a little more. If someone tells you to buy 18 12" JL's, you should check that out to see if you need that.

If you're looking for economy, check this setup out. I run (don't laugh) a Jensen XS1212
(39.95 at Wal-Mart) powered by a 300W Jensen amp (45.00 at the local pawn shop) in a sealed box that displaces 1.57 cubic feet, minus the driver's displacement. We made sure the box was airtight, and believe it or not, it knocks out of control, considering the cheap parts. No one believes that I only have one 12' sub in the back, until they actually see it. Pioneer 4-way 6x9's (150W each) sit in back as wel. I enclosed those as well, and they are mounted on either side of the sub box. The weak link right now is that I have Pioneer 4x6's in the dash, powered by the deck ( I am working on a set of kicks for component speakers currently). The deck is a Pioneer DEH-P44 (also soon to be replaced, it scratches my discs.)
All of these speakers would probably run you about 150 bucks, and the deck can be had for about 100. so, minus wiring and such, I have a $350 system (Xover as 100 bucks), that simplys bumps. I have no SPL readings as of yet, but it punches out notes that you can feel in your stomach.

It all depends on how much money you are planning on spending......
I spent about $350 on my system and am happy with the results......I may not have the best brands out there......but they get the job done for me.....
Maybe a figure to work with would help us tell you a best combo.......
