Pioneer HU= no sound
I bought the pioneer DEH-3400 head unit in january and for about a month I had an amp and sub hooked up to it using the RCA's Everything worked fine.
Yesterday, I took out the sub/amp ( only unhooked everything at the amp, didn't remove the deck). Took the capaciters out of the rear 6x9's too.
I took the + & - amp wires completly out, and since I didn't want to remove the deck, I taped the ends of the RCA and the remote wires so they wouldn't touch anything.
When i turned the unit on today, (1st time) everything came on but no sound front or rear. I unplugged the deck and checked everything and it was all well connected. I did smell the smell of burnt electronics at the back of the deck.
I took the deck to a shop to be serviced under warranty, but I'm wondering if I did anything wrong? Does it hurt to leave the RCA's hooked up if they're not connected to an amp?
Just wondering what caused it to fry so i dont do it again.

I've left unplugged RCA wires in my system lots of times with no problems.
Sounds to me like a component in your HU just happened to go south coincidentally.

You have a bad Amp IC in it. I would always disconnect the RCA if not used. If by chance they hit 12V supply it WILL kill your radio. I don’t think this is the problem here, there is not a lot of places in the back for them to hit 12V. I just always do it as a precaution thing. The amp IC going bad is vary common.

NEEDAZ, I just picked it up from the repair shop, and thats exactly what they said was wrong with it.
You say this is very common, do you mean just with pioneer, or with all decks in general?
BTW, Thanks for the replies.

It’s vary common with all HU. The amp IC is the most stressed component in the unit. The amp IC gets vary hot because it is working so hard, and this is not good for electronic components. Don’t get me wrong, I think dollar for dollar you can’t beat Pioneer. The design and build quality are great. I would also suggest being vary careful when you are installing the unit. This is not a flame, but 95% of the time if it stops working when your changing things around, you did something to it. Some times all it takes is letting one of the speaker outputs hit ground or 12V for a second to kill the amp IC.
