My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

Hey this my first car. It is a 1987 Camaro 305 V8. It is all stock except for a new exhaust system and an Edelbrock Carb. (( which can bee seen below)) It is rust free and runs strong. Although paint is starting to chip off and some places missing so im going to paint it eventually ((please suggest colors i should paint it)). Im also looking to put some IROC-Z rims on it too (( if some one is selling thiers please let me know!!)). So its a work in progress but tell me what you think so far. Also let me know what else would look cool on it or in it.

Welcome to the board............

Go to the classified section and you will find LOTS of IROC rims for sale. GOld IROC rims would be nice!

As for colour......stay with the black or medium to dark blue.

FYI...........In case you were wondering, in Canada we do spell it colour not color. LOL

Welcome! Your right about needing some Iroc rims, cause those rims are UGLY. I also think you should keep it black. And maybe an Iroc hood or cowl hood. the stock hood is to plain and boaring for me.

Nice car, how is the interrior? You should gut all the A/C and its horrible cables and put some ceramic headers and that thing would look sweet...

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

Hey i agree with u about the rims and about the hood. I plan on buying a cowl hood before painting it. And i most likly will piant about the same dark blue tht it is currently. And also i am going to buy new headers and clean up tht big heap of wirey mess and get some new valve covers (probly chrome). Here are some interior pics and the third brake light.

I don't think they are ugly only thing I don't like about them is no matter what you do they will always corrode thats why I got rid of mine.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

Nice car... Here's what I would do if it was my car. I'd keep it like it is, a non-gfx car(especially dont add the 91-92 "snow plow" GFX, lol). Then I'd add a 2" 69 Camaro style cowl hood to it. I'd paint it black(or a darker Royal blue) and then Id either go with black or keep the tan interior, maybe go with leather seats though(but thats up to you). I'd probably put some different wheels, keep it 15" or 16" only though, any larger looks odd on a non-gfx car. Good luck with the car, looking forward to seeing its progress.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

nice looking camaro! first thing i would do is to find a real instrument cluster, and swap appropriate senders. after that i'd get rid of that hideous 3rd brake light.

...curious. i thought that if an 87 came w/ a spoiler, it'd have the 3rd brake light in it? is the spoiler original?

i agree 91-92 GFX, and maybe a 91-92 z28 wing, rims, and hood. pretty good find, if i recall only '86 had that high mounted light (please correct me if i'm wrong)?

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

Yea you guys are correct about the third brake light in the 87's which mine is but it was made september of 86. The spoiler was on the car when i bought it and i can tell for shure that it was put on after origanally bought whether it was the first or second ower that did it. BTW thanks for all your guys suggestions and comments!!
----------
Early 1987 sport coupes had the option of having the rear spoiler or not so thts probly why the light is there.

Once you decide if you are staying "stock" or going modified to what ever level, you will know what to do. Nice car. Have fun with it is my suggestion. I have two different style, yet the same generation Camaro's in my '86 & my '92. Only your imagination and the availabilty of parts will hold you back. Stay with the dark colors like black or blue.

I say keep it black and put some nice rims on there... U can most likely get away w/o the GFX like that, but it's your choice of course...

Nice find. If this is your first car, im sure you will really enjoy it - just be careful.

Anyhow, I was wondering if that was a bolt on exhaust system, or just a muffler, and how was it put on? I kinda like the way it sounds.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

I alsohave an 87, I haft to disagree with what most of everyone said. For sure get the spoiler brake light and ditch that one, But personally dont think you should put ground effects if it didnt come with them, why make it look like something its not?? I agree on the cowl hood, I just got one for mine and its in the paint shop now. You can get by with those rims, but Chrome irocs would look a lot cooler. I would also upgrade to the 145 speedometer becasue it can go well over 85, ive gotten mine to 130 and still had some push but i quit due to traffic ahead. Iveheard nothing but bad news with the edelbrock carbs so be careful with that. Love the car btw

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

I dont think im ever going to put ground effects on my car. Where I live I only see RS's Z28's and IROC's. So i like the sports coupe look and I think its cool.

About the steering wheel, I bought that and I like it so if you dont im sorry.

About the ignition ring, it was like tht when i bought the car.

About the exhaust, it was all new Napa stock replacement from the cat. back. I am ordering the Hooker headers and Headmen Y-pipe from Summit racing when i get my debit card in two weeks. Then she'll sound like a beast!

I also plan on buying a JET stage 2 chip probly some time next month.

And also i went down to the car junk yard and got a headliner, sunvisors, weatherstripping for the doors, drivers side front turn signal light, two front speakers, and a dome light with blue bulbs

I would keep the plain body look. Do not see too many Camaro's like that. Kinda like the Formula look, simple and mean!

If you are going to get headers, get a good catback exhaust like Flowmaster or the el cheapo NAPA exhaust is only going to choke flow.

Don't waste your money on a chip. Just up the timing and run good gas.

I have a high flow cat and flowmaster 80's series, it sounds great and ive had no problems with it. You might be better off getting a new cluster on ebay, it will be a lot cheaper and you only really should change out the speedoeter.

On the exhaust system you need to check your emissions laws. Some states require you to have a cat on your car, Some states don't. If you have to have one get a High Flow Cat. I have Edelbrock headers, High Flow Cat and Flowmaster exhaust. And yeah I love the coupes with no kit also...This is mine

Don't you dare ever think about putting ground effects on that. Gorgeous Sport coupe.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

Well Well, another nebraskan. Can't find many of us around .

I'm not the biggest fan of the car not having ground effects (I like mine having them) but its really up to the driver. sometimes they can be a nasty pain (high speeds & many Nebraska roads are not kind to them). From my own view--as I have a friend with an 84 that looks quite similiar--a good racing stripe compliments the car quite well.

Metallic Dark Midnight Blue is very good color for the car from what I have seen, and its not very often you see such a color. I'd avoid lighter colors or colors that you see a lot of. Maybe a few window stickers are needed....I've got the idea of when I finish the work on my car of making a window decal "Ricers Eaten #" with the number being easily removable & replaced. Or maybe replacing ***** with Mustang....god knows we see enough of them around.

But its really up to you just enjoy it and don't rush anything you always have plenty of time.

they have the "goodmark" steel cowl hoods on ebay right now for 299+ shipping. been highly debating one for a while now. i think they would look killer on a SC like ours.

Are you in Omaha? I am there from time to time because my kid goes to UNO. I might stop by and see your progress. Not many SC's in Omaha. I say if you want the mean street look...no GFX. And dark paint..blue or black (which I think is the best) would look killer...

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!

I just recently put a good mark cowl hood on my sport coupe, I LOVE IT, the ones on ebay arent goodmark, but I debated ordering the one you are talking about until I found a goodmark one listed locally on craigs list that was brand new for 225. The goodmark ones have the gm genuine restoration part stamp on the inside of the hoood and it says goodmark, But those are suppossed to be just as good, Mine is a goodmark 2 inh, but it measure closer to 3 and its a perfect fit, Well here are some pics

Excuse the car being so dirty, Let me know wat you think

Camaropunk is right...raise the hood with a cowl and fatten the tires with some different rims...I can't wait to pickup my 86 coupe from the paint shop...I am going to put my IROC rims on and it will look great, especially because of the no ground effects...
