Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

Ok this is the situation I have a 1992 camaro rs with rear drums, I'm swapping 1997 camaro pbr rear disc brakes just brakes not whole rearend. Mounting plates and shims mounted up fine, but when I put the disc rotor on my axle the caiper bracket will not slide between the rotor and the mounting bracket on the axle flange. Just wondering if anyone else has had this same problem before?

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

are there any shims between the axle mounting flange and the bracket? if so, take them out..
if not, put a spacer between the rotor and axle to move the rotor out.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

there is one shim between the axle flange and mounting bracket, but I wouldn't think that would make much of a difference. I probably need about 1/8 of inch clearance so the caliper bracket will slide in between the rotor and mounting bracket. I wonder if I could take a little metal off the cailper bracket or the axle mounting bracket? Or like you said have some kind of spacer to move the rotor up some.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

Somebody else had this problem but I do not remember what they did for a solution. First thind to do is to take the spacer out then you may need to have some machined off.

Thank you all for the help, about got it figured out did have to machine down the cailper bracket just not clearing in one little spot, but might just machine just a little more.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

Update got the bracket to finally clear the rotor on passenger side now brake pads so close to rotors probably going to have to turn the new rotors down enough so the brake pads will have enough clearance to not rub the brake rotors. I had to shave off almost 1/8 of a inch so the caliper bracket would clear.

That is not good. You need to make sure the caliper is centered over the rotor. Either by moving the caliper or moving the rotor. In your case, shimming the rotor out might be easier.

I suspect we are missing something though, as it doesn't sound normal to have to do this.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

I know it sounds weird but everything lined up after I shaved a little off the caliper bracket, I think it has something to do with axle thickness on drum brakes or disc brake brackets on the later pbr's because their thicker than the early ones and the aftermarket brackets or thinner also.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

ok I feel so stupid right now. I did get one side to fit right but on the drivers side I took to much metal off the brake cailper bracket, now I just want to start from scratch. I'm going to have to get two new brake brackets and try to use some kind of spacer to move the rotor out some. Can anyone tell me if you can use a wheel spacer in between the axle and rotor or use some washers to move the rotor out some?

I would not use washers. They are not ground for flatness and thickness. You can use a wheel spacer at long as its small enough to fit in the rotor. How far do you think it needs to be spaced out?

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

I need around 1/8 of a inch. I read a few posts on other threads were a few had the same problem and it was on the later 3rd gen camaros with the later PBR brakes on 4th gen camaros. I just wonder if there is spacer that would fit in the inside of the rotor. If anyone can give me answer who has had the same problem and found a solution please help me. I appreciate everyone who has left a post to help me come up with a answer.

Not shure for your LT1 backing plates, but this http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i29.html backing plates are a no brainer.
Here you can see how they fit on the axle https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...m-o-e-j65.html

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

I would go that route if I would't have cut the axle flanges and drilled the mounting holes bigger, but thanks for the idea.

Measure the inside of the rotor and go from there. Customs spacers are also an option and not that expensive.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GOR-SP601S/

^ 6" OD is probably pretty safe to fit inside the rotor.

Thanks 87350IROC that is exactly what I was looking for measured inside diameter and that one would fit perfect.

Does anyone know if the stock rear wheel spacers will fit the inside of stock rear rotors that had the later PBR brakes on them?

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

To anyone having the same problems I was having with the caliper bracket not having enough clearance to mount to the brake bracket. If you use the stock wheel spacers that was used on the 1988-1992 camaro 16 inch rear wheels in between the axle and brake rotor it will give you enough clearance to mount the cailper bracket. These spacers are 1/8 of an inch thick, will post some more pics when I have a chance.

make sure when it is all together the abutments are not rubbing the rotor or it will trash the rotors quik. Found that out the hard way on my 97 camaro

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

Have a question for anyone willing to help me. After I got the brake swap done and changed the proportional valve spring out was working great then it started raining outside so had to quit, but then I noticed on the drivers side the piston plunger didn't go back in, it has locked the brake pads to the brake rotors like I have put on the parking brake. I haven't bleed the brakes yet but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else before bleeding the brakes.

Ok guys bleed the brakes and passenger rear stops on a dime but the drivers side brake piston clamp rod will push out but will not retract back. Does anyone know the answer to this, there is no air in the lines that I can tell.

Re: Lt1 PBR brake swap help please

Nevermind I guess I'm not very patient, it's working now and just let me say to anyone doing this swap make sure you change the proportional valve spring because when I first did this swap the brakes were barely stopping. When I changed the spring it is amazing the difference, it stops on a dime now. Thanks to everyone for the help.

I used the 1ncr5 springs they were rated at 30. If you don't have another person to help you bleed the brakes just build a one man bleeder, I built one with a glass pickle jar, drilled a hole in the top and put a old steel brake line in the top and soldered the steel brake line to the jar and took a hot glue gun and put glue around were I soldered it to make sure it was sealed. Then I put the plastic tubing on the steel brake line coming out of jar and other end to the bleeder. It worked like a charm
