inner brake pad play

Hi I was checking brakes due to clanking noise while driving and checked found the inner pad was a bit loose, but when I apply brake it isn't and moves out to rotor and stops it.
What would make the inner pad have play? Caliper moves back and forth fine. Car has no pull to one side - brakes normal

Re: inner brake pad play

I have the same issue, front brakes seem to make a jiggling noise when driving over
rough surfaces or potholes.. Ive replaced the pads, did a thorough inspection and
can't seem to figure out what the hell is going on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by the both of us!

Re: inner brake pad play

Stock iron front calipers...

Inner pad is supposed to have a spring clip to hold it tight to the piston.

Outer pad needs to have the two small tabs bent in to hold the pad tight to the caliper. This can be done with a large pair of channel locks or a c-clamp.

Thanks for the replay RBob. I did indeed install the clips on the piston
side of the brake pad, however ..Ive never had to bend the tabs on the
outer pads. It is quite annoying having a beautiful T/A rolling down the
street, but with the ungodly jiggling that sounds like the car is falling
apart is driving me up the wall!

Im smelling a LS1 conversion.

Re: inner brake pad play

Any chance your car has aftermarket upper strut mounts? Some have too much up/down play that will knock & jiggle when going over bumps.

Try this: when going over slight bumps and the noise is there, gently apply the brakes. If the noise stops it is the pads being loose. If the noise continues, it isn't the brakes.

Note that it can be both. I had this for a while with the C4 front brakes along with aftermarket upper strut mounts. The brake noise was fixed by bending out the anti-rattle springs (more force/tension to prevent movement on bumps).

And shimming the upper strut mounts to prevent the up/down play.

Re: inner brake pad play

Yes it is indeed the pads themselves, the noise is not prevelant with slight brake pressure.
I remember when I installed the ceramics that I did stretch the spring clips a bit for more
pressure against the caliper, but no luck. Ill try to play around with it a bit more and see
if I can get it to stop.. But, was hoping for some past remedy.

At least the problem is isolated, now just to tackle it somehow!

Re: inner brake pad play

I did bend the clips on the outer pad, it is tight, but didn't get any clips with the inner pads. wonder if I can get them from a auto recycler?

If you bought your pads recently, It should have came in the kit. If that is the
case, id bring back the reciept to the parts store and see if you can snag them
off a stocked pad kit?
