Locked up front caliper while driving?

Last year what I think were original calipers needed a pad change. When I did this they were very difficult to push back with a c clamp. After a test drive the front passenger side was so locked up it nearly caught fire. So I went to the parts store and bought a new one for both sides. Now that was last summer, even with the new calipers the car still pulls to the side. So today while out driving the front passenger side locked up and started smoking like hell and I got my girlfriend to pick me up another caliper and changed it on the side of the road. This one does not lock up but the uneven braking is still there. It still pulls to the side. Could it be the flex lines? They look iffy most likely stock. Everything else is new which is kinda scary because the last time it was practically on fire. Any ideas?

Yes. Common problem, especially with lines as old as yours.

Re: Locked up front caliper while driving?

I had this problem doing 130 down the track. I replaced all the rubber lines with braided russells, problem solved.

Re: Locked up front caliper while driving?

Ok did the lines swap and the problem is solved. Picked up flex lines from Rockauto (kick *** prices). Rock auto was about $20 cheaper per line then anything local.

Re: Locked up front caliper while driving?

I know this is an old thread, but better than making a new one, as I have mostly the same problem.

I have an 85, it's in really rough shape but it drives.
The rear drivers' side (4w disc) brake is dragging, and about two days after i bought the car, the front drivers' wheel let out a loud squeal and there was a lot of resistance from that wheel. I parked it about 2 blocks after the noise, and actually burned my fingers on the rim. I'm assuming the caliper locked up, there's no grinding so i don't think it's a bearing. I'm new to F-bodies and RWD cars in general, i've driven saturns for the last 3 years.

All that being said, do you think any auto parts chain stores will carry the braided lines? We have an o'reilly's, a napa, and a car quest in my town.

What else should i check on that wheel if it does turn out to be the caliper locking and not the bearing?

Thanks for all the help.

Miles.

any parts store can get the lines other then the bearing or the caliper there is nothing else that will cause that problem.

I was talking about the Russell Stainless lines, but i checked all the stores and no luck.
OEM/Drivable > Parked.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: Locked up front caliper while driving?

Ok im having a similar problem as the original poster. I changed the pads on the front and one of the calipers was really hard to press back in on the passenger side front. After I finally got it to press in I had a hard time to even get the caliper back on the rotor. I no I will need new brake hoses because my current ones are looking pretty bad. When I test drove the vehicle while braking it pulled to the left but at times while accelerating it pulled to the right. When I called autozone for a price check on the lines they said they carried 2 for an RS camaro. One for the performance package and one without the package. How do I tell which package my car has for sure before I start buying parts? The car is a 1992 305 automatic RS camaro.

The performance package would be the 1LE set-up (dual-piston alum calipers and 11.7" rotors. I'd suggest you have the standard set-up (single-piston iron Delco-Moraine calipers).

GM's factory race car, RPO 1LE. Should you be interested, a search will turn up a ton of into.

There are pics in my vbGarage (click on the icon next to my online status, lower left), if that's helpful.
