One shot brakes

Here is the issue Im having with the set up I have it takes a while to build vacuum for the brakes so Im looking for the best solution vacuum can vs vacuum pump. Im trying to find the one used with the most success. The car is used for city driving. Or if there is a better fix then those two.

Re: One shot brakes

I can tell you that the vacuum can only helps a little bit. I use to have a cam in my car that didnt make much vacuum at all and I had a can on the car then. You have to rev the motor a few times to get a vacuum on the can. After that you can hit the brakes about 3 times or so and then your out of vacuum again. In stop and go traffic I was having to rev the motor every now and then to pull a vacuum in the can. Thankfully my new cam setup has more power than the old one and enough vacuum to run power brakes with no assistance.

I would look into either the vacuum pump or a hydro-boost setup.

Re: One shot brakes

It uses pressure from your power steering pump instead of vacuum. It is a lot cleaner looking (I think anyways) than a big booster. The only downfall to it is that if you break the belt on the motor or bust a power steering hose, you also loose power brakes.

Re: One shot brakes

thank you I will look into that to see if the pro out way the cons I would hate to slam into another car because a belt broke lol. Can you use both? (current braking system and hydo-boost)

Re: One shot brakes

No, you cant use both. The hydro boost replaces the booster. I believer people have said one out of a astro van will work but I dont quote me on that. This may be a custom project, but looking at your info it seems that projects are the norm on your car. This is a pic of what a hydro boost unit looks like.

Re: One shot brakes

Thank you built91Z28 for all the help and info. And yes I have been over and under this car more then behind the wheel lol. But if I didn't put my money into the car the girlfriend would just take it lol. Its my savings account that never earns interest in fact I really don't think most of the stuff Im doing now is adding any valve other then general knowledge of car repair.

Re: One shot brakes

I'm right there with you. The only parts I reused off my car were the body itself (which has some work done to it), the block (which isnt original to the car), and the crank (not original either). Other than that, the car is new front to back. Took almost 6 years of work to get it driving. I've put 412 miles on it in 3 years and its currently at my work right now getting a 6 speed put in, new exhaust and a few other things. I swear I'm going to drive it after this though.

Re: One shot brakes

upon further investigation I may have may vacuum lines hooked up wrong. Im going to add a port in my carb spacer plate to get true vacuum before the supercharger I was working off intake vacuum going to play around hope this solves my braking problem.

Re: One shot brakes

Nope that wasn't the problem lol. I can get a can for about 50 bucks, I guess thats worth a try. If that doesn't help at all I found a 12 volt vacuum pump kit for around 250.00 and I will be taking that route. The idea of breaking a belt and no being able to stop freaks me out a bit.

Re: One shot brakes

True 2.5" duals with X pipe. Not sure what mufflers yet. It will have to be a bullet style though as I am ending the exhaust at the rear axle. But first the T56 is going in then I am going to figure the exhaust out. I am trying to find a system that is not too loud but flows very well. My old setup was loud to the point I couldnt even hear the cam. It was just noise.

Re: One shot brakes

What headers are you using? I have true duals with no cross over pipe but I hate how they're ran both pipes run down the passenger side then cut back in and come back out each side of the rear. There is so many twist and turns its restricting the heck out of it. I also have no idea where Im going to put this vacuum can.

Re: One shot brakes

I have Hedman LT's. The cheap 1 5/8" ones (I know I need better ones). I'm running one pipe down the passenger side and one down the drivers side. Its a tight fit, but they will fit and not interfere at all with ground clearance. I know 2.5" will atleast. I ran my brothers this way. You can see them here. He has shorty headers so mine will be somewhat different that his, but from the trans back will be the same as mine. I'll have room to run the pipe next to the trans inbetween the trans and the frame.

This picture is with the exhaust on the car. You can see the ground clearance.

As far as where to put the canister, if you have room like I did, this is one option. Its where I use to have mine. I had to make a bracket to bolt it too, but it was simple. You can see it next to the booster. I dont remember what is there factory, but its no longer there on my car since I stripped the engine compartment of everything it didnt need to run. And the hood never hit it either.
