Wilwood Brake Kit

I'm looking to purchase the Wilwood 140-2992 front brake kit for my GTA. I'm primarily interested in weight reduction and rotating weight reduction. The kit comes with the usual aluminum parts with 10.75"x.81" and 4 pistons calipers.

This is similair to what comes on the 89GTA from the factory except for the 4 brake pads. The weight of the Wilwood kit is 39 pounds per side. So it looks like I would gain some braking along with a good loss of weight, rotating and unsprung.

Any thoughts.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Yeah, check to see if it is DOT approved, most Wilwood stuff is not.

Also, are they floating calipers?

Does not say DOT approved. Checking on the floating issue.

No, it's a fixed mount caliper. The dynalite is a pretty small caliper too.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Have you considered 12" C4 brakes? You can do them for that cost or less and they would give you a full 12" rotor. I ran these for a while before I went to the 13" HDs and they were very good, I beat on them pretty good.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Hi Ed

I'm looking into all options and that is one of them. What would be the cost with an aluminum hat and corresponding rotor. I would prefer a .81 inch rotor if possible for weight savings. I primarily want to save as much weight as possible with some improvement in braking. A 12.00x.81 front brake rotor would serve me compared to what my 89GTA now has. You can PM me with costs as I'm interested and you have my attention. Thank You

Note: updated post.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Ed, Update

After looking at your web site one more time the C4 setup is exactly what I'm looking for. Just need the 12.00"x.81" lightweight rotors with the proper aluminum hats. Again when you get time PM me with the price. Thank You

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Glad to help, I just happen to have a set of new two piece Wilwood rotors for that application, let me take a shot of it and I'll post it up and get back with you. Thanks!

Looking at your web site again the "C4 rotors" shown in your picture may not be all that heavy. Any clue to the difference in weight between that rotor setup and the Wilwood two piece. Thank You, Allen

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Well I thought I had you covered with these rotors but it's not so easy. The Wilwood hats have a large OD with not much taper, large enough to contact the C4 abutment bracket leaving me two options should I make this work: 1) Machine a groove on the outside of the hat or, 2) clearance the abutment just a bit to clear the hat. Either one would be OK seeing that you only replace the rotor ring and nothing else should you need to replace the rotors, they are Wilwood PNs. Not sure if it would be worth it to you.

Weight, the stock iron rotor weighs 13#, the two piece rotor 11#. Again, C4 Rear application rotors used in this setup.

And this is where the abutment hits the hat:

I agree in that I don't think 2 pounds per corner will be worth the additional cost. I have a mill and could machine them myself. So far your setup looks to be the best and I don't think anything will change my mind. It looks like I can just order the brake kit online when I'm ready.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Those rotors are 12"? Can you get them in 13" that way it should fit just fine. Looking for some spiffy rotors to go w/ a baer track system but the eradistpeed plus are a little rich for my blood. Or are they the narrow .9 rotor? If the hat fits, there must be a 1.1 rotor available?

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Check the Wilwood brake site. The have a lot of different size rotors. Those in the picture by Ed are .81" thick.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Allen, Those .81" thick rotors on the front of your car would be very dangerous. That Wilwood brake package is designed SPECIFICALLY for a full time drag car doing "one stop"...then a period of time for cooldown before the next "one stop".

These cars a far too heavy for a lightweight .81" front rotor for even slowly running to the grocery store.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Also I will add some spcs I have from my Wilwood custom build.

My stock configuration(but not stock parts) iron caliper 10.5"x 1.0" rotor setup weighed 39.6 lbs.(with spindles pads and lines)
My custom 6 piston 12.90x 1.25" rotor setup weighs 36.4 lbs per side (with spindles, pads and lines).

my custom setup is much larger yet shed 3.2 lbs per side.

Re: Wilwood Brake Kit

Thanks Dean. I will take a look at your setup. Eds C4 brake kit does not appear to shed any weight over stock. Trying to shed weight and upgrade brakes at the same time may not be that easy without spending big bucks.
