Differences in late and early model spindles?

Transmission: Pro-Built Road Race 700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.23 Dana 44
Differences in late and early model spindles?

I am finishing up school and about to head home fore the summer and work on my C4HD brake upgrade. I was wondering if these are late or early model spindles.

Here's a picture of the spindle, I lightly sandblasted it over spring break.

those look just like the spindles on my '92 (well before I hacked em up) raised bosses and all.

oh and thanks for starting the LS1 thread it was very helpfull

As long as they have raised bosses, I would say they are the "late" design. Honestly, there isn't a big issue with using either one. I tend to use the "early" style without the bosses on LS1 kits as they may give a bit more bracket clearance to the rotor face, but not always. I'm not the best explainer but I hope you understand. With C4s, either type will be fine.

Do you have a picture on hand of the early model spindles? Since both will work fine now I am just curious on what GM changed.

Awesome, Yea this is off topic but oh well, I went there in the morning's senior year for a networking academy class. Wish I took shop now so I could have used the lifts and stuff.

The stock spindles on my 84 had the raised bosses. I dug through piles of thirdgen spindles at an F-body wrecker when i picked out a pair to modify for my 1LEs, and I couldn't see any differences that were readily apparent.

I can agree with that...I really think it just depends on which foundry did the castings as I've pulled both types from various year cars. I know there are two different types but as for the years, there may be many differences.

Like Ed and Apeiron said, I have seen both types on cars at the salvage yard.

The difference lies in the area where the raised bosses are. The early style do not have the raised bosses so it seems like the "arms" where the holes we use are located, are thicker. If the arms are thicker, there is no need to raise the thread bosses to put the mounting surface for the factory dust shield in the correct place. I think the "early" style are better because when you drill the dust shield holes for big bolts like we use on our adapter brackets most of the raised thread bosses are drilled away. This leaves only a small area left on the spindle for your bracket to seat on. I have the late style spindles for my latest project (stock calipers/C4 rotors). But I wish I could have found some good early style instead.
