Banging Sound When Hitting C4 Brakes at Low Speeds?!?!

my c4 front brakes defenitly stop like whoa but are making a strange sound. when going very slow maybe 5-10 mph they make a thumping sound when you first tap on the brakes. at higher speeds it doesnt happen and when you are completly stopped and hit the brakes it doesnt happen. just when you are moving very slowly and only when you first press the brakes and pressure first builds up.

i cant track it down to one side or the other or even if its the master cylinder (reservior hitting? i dont think so but you just cant rule it out) and was wondering if anyone had this problem before or had any suggestions how i could begin to fix it

It could be that your pads fit tightly in the carriers and when you apply the brakes, they bind up a bit until the pressure applied by the caliper pistons overcomes the binding force that's preventing them from sliding freely and then you hear the pop of the caliper assembly "slamming" the pads against the rotor. I hear it every now and then on my RS but not on my 1LE car. I suggest taking the calipers out of the carriers and filing a bit off of the areas where the pads sit in the carrier and see if that does it.

good to hear from you ed. ill have to try that. i thought something of that nature might be the problem but i should still hear it at high speed braking too. im going to try that though, i need to repaint my calipers and the bendix pads did in fact fit "too close for comfort" snug.

I would guess its not your brakes at all. It may very well be a suspension part worn- I would suggest popping off the dust cap and checking the rubber inside the strut mounts. The strut is probably making contact with the front of the metal strut mount, or something else up front of this nature
