cost of convertible top replacement

I'm looking into buying an 88-92 Z 28 convertible. Some need convertible top replacement. Generally, how much does it cost to have one replaced? Or, are they easy enough to buy and do myself?
Are there any things to look for in the interior or body to look for?
Also, in looking, my first pick would be 1988-1990 Iroc convertibles, second, 1991-1992 Z28 convertibles.
This looks like a cool site!
Thanks, Wayne

i have replaced mine and i paid i think it was 300 for me to do it and the kid that i bought it off of had it replace and he said he paid 1000. Personnally i think he got ripped off. It is not that hard just time consuming. Pick a weekend that it is not going to rain and do it. Have fun.

I was quoted $900... However, I plan on doin it myself. I already had to repair the back where its glued to the frame, so the rest shouldnt be all that hard.

89droptop, did they come with instructions? How hard was it?

I got quoted a price of $200 from a friend of mine who worked at ASC here in NJ., the only thing is, I have to install it myself, but may take it to a place called Ed's trim shop to install it. Engine, suspension, etc., I can handle, but I don't think I can handle a top replacement!! Hey Rob, if your's turns out ok, wanna do mine?? LOL. By the way, you goin to SLP day??

I appreciate the information. I found that Classic Industries sells the top for $595. I thought for that price it must include all of the frame and everything! I called their tech and she said it didn't. It seems strange that the 67-69's are less that $200 and the 87-92 are triple the cost. What other companies would be reasonable?

Yep, your looking at about $900 done right. You can save money by going vinyl but rag tops looks way better.

I bought mine reasonable from www.seatco.com and paid a guy from the interior shop $100 on the side to put it on. Looks great. I could have done it myself (I have on other cars) but I wanted my headliner and everything else to be just as it was.

I failed to mention it in my prior post, but the price I posted WAS for a black cloth OEM style top, not vinyl. I agree the vinyl isn't the way to go.

I have paid as little as $200 for a cloth top installed and as much as $900. The $200 job was a used top from a guy who changed top colors. The $900 top was $300.00 top $600.00 labor. It has warranty and the shop that put it on also fixed alot of little things that were wrong up under the top. It has been my experience that you get what you pay for.
