Automotive Paint Companies

I am looking for opinions on the different automotive paint companies. What is better? Sherwin Williams, PPG or others if there are any.

DUPONT is, in my opinion, the best paint manufacturer ou there.

Glasurite is absolutely incredible and probably the best paint on the market imho, but it is very expensive. House of Kolors has amazing colors and types of paint (candy, pearl, translucent, glow in the dark, etc...), but I don't know about their durability.

As you can see, everybody has a different favorite. You know why? Because they're all the same. My father uses Sherwin Williams, but has also sprayed PPG and Dupont, and they all flow, look & hold up exactly the same. They all use the same urethane technology. My father's sprayed Sherwin clear over PPG color, etc, etc. It's all the same. Just make sure you use a 2-stage urethane paint, not the single stage acrylic **** from 15 years ago.

If you start using one brand of product, then stick with it through the whole process. primer/sealer/paint/clear.

You may have reaction with reducers and hardners mixing different brand together.

Just to be on the safe side.

I like PPG. I use to mix it at a local paint store and have painted with it. PPG has never let me down so I will stick with it.

The key to a good paint job is prep, and Letting the painter use the materials he is use to spraying.

I like Sherwin Williams because it does not shrink like some of the others. The only downside to it is that the paint is REALLY REALLY hard, and so if you sand & polish, you spend alot of time doing so. Some of the other paints are easier to sand and buff, but the shine does not last as long.

Just my experience

Im not knocking sherwin-williams, I have never used it.

I do know that when using ppg dcu 2020 clear which has now changed to 2002 I think. If you dont buff within 48 hours it is like trying to buff a tire. almost impossible. But the shine is great.

One way I like to check my clear open the can up and see if it has a yellow tint to it. The 2020 ppg is clear as water so If a person used a "clear" clear without the yellow tint Would result in a truer color.

What I am trying to say is that the yellow tint in the clear may make the color look different than using "clear" clear. Especially when using white.

Dont take me wrong. Sherwin-williams, dupont, I have heard good things about them, I am just use to spraying PPG and know how to get the paint to flow good and am able to adjust ie
"if the paint is drying to fast ", or"too slow", or If I need enhancer or stuff for fish eye".

I have been quoted $1200 for a complete paint job from Maaco -minus door jambs for my convertible.
This includes pulling a dented front fender and dealing with a little door rust and a rusty under trunk lid.
Maaco has a sign in the window for Sherwin Williams and I just pictured house paint being brushed on my car. Not a great image.
Does $1200 sound good or bad?

A good average paint job using high quality products will run about $2500.00 taking out a dent or two and a few typical dings. $3500.00 for a complete color change.

The quality PPG / Dupont (can't speak for Sherwin Williams) will add up to about $500.00 to $800.00 body shop cost for supplies needed.

So the Maaco job will be economical but you will get an idea of how much labor they will put into your car (spray it) and the quality of materials, and how much material they will use because the $1200.00 will also include their profit.

I've heard that...well for example in my case...

I have a blue paint job, and I'm going to change it to black. I was told that just scuffing the blue paint with...lets say 400 grit automotive sandpaper, would be a sufficient surface to paint on. So, if I scuffed the paint, I could spray the other paint right on and then clear and so on.

Is this true?

Yes, you can just scuff your old paint with 400 and it will be fine. You should, however, wet sand with 400 to provide a smoother surface.

PPG Global. Glasurit is almost as good, but not very user friendly. I use R-M daily and it's painfully mediocre.

PPG global is my all around favorite, used it for two years, and the clear (894) has a ten foot deep look to it, without a lot of effort.

It matters what you're looking for in my opinion. All the paint companies out today are great, and only getting better. The only difference is the appearance. If you want a REALLY professional looking job go with PPG, they have awesome products and some really tight looking colors that are still easy on the eye. If you want something wild and are looking for something that really stands out go with HoK (House of Kolors). They, hands down, have the awesomest selection of candies, flakes, pearls.....

I use Marten Seniour Custom Color, and am very satisfied with it. My car consisted of 8 different colors, and never went above the 400$ mark. It's all up to the person squirting the paint.

Good Luck.

martin Seniour (NAPA) paints are made by Sherwin Williams.

You should also be able to get any color you want with any brand. They all have the "chromillusion" style paints, but they all call it something different. The stuff itself all comes from the same company. They all have similar (identical??) mica and metallic flakes, and their raw pigments aren't really much different either. Some paint brand may have a few custom blends that the others don't offer, but all of them offer enough pigments to match every single OEM paint color past or present.

I do not know if I have ever seen that, but I imagine you might be able to find something close. The best you might be able to do is pearl white.

The metal flake paints seem to be mostly on darker colors. Blues, reds. never seen a metal flake yellow either now that I think about it. Black is kind of neat, but it starts to look like a boat paint job if too heavy of a flake is used.

are you talking about the pearl coat? there are several different colors of pearl, at some angles it looks white, but at other angles it looks like a light blue red green, whatever color you use...

Any color can be made metalic. You just add the metalic to the paint or spray it on in tri-coat form. Pearl and metalic, are basically the same thing. Just different shape and size flake. A pearlcoat is sprayed between the base color and the clearcoat. This is then called a tri-coat. The reason for the middle coat of pearl is so it has a greater effect. If you mix pearl in with basecoat, (many colors have that) it looses the effect of a "pearl".

Here's a decent pic of my GTA that shows the pearlescant paint:

I'll never own a plain white car again after having this car.

I have seen metallic white colors, but none compare to a good pearlescant white.
