tips for cleaning carpet?

1 leaky heater core + 2 trips to muddy scrap yard = nasty carpet. What are the best ways and products to clean the carpet?

I'm pretty sure that the Power Clean that is sold at AutoZone can be used to clean carpet once it is diluted. Be careful, it's pretty potent at full strength, as I was using some to clean the concrete floor of the shop where I'm working on my 305 engine right now. I rinsed the floor with water, and laid some absorbent material down (it's used by a local fuel supplier to absorb spilt diesel fuel, and feels like a mat. it's hard to describe). Anyway, about 5 minutes later, the power clean ate a hole in the material.

I would hate to see what this stuff would do to human skin. Wear gloves, and protective eyewear at all times when handling this chemical.

It will cost around 6 bucks for a gallon container if I remember correctly.

spray down some kind of spot remover and then remove it after awhile with a steamer. if you don't have access to one you can use the poor man's version and get a bowl of the hottest soapy water you got, rub it into the carpet, then vacuum it out and should be good as new, repeat a few times if really bad in some spots, hope that helps

I removed the seats and had a professional carpet cleaner do the deed. $20 as I recall.

That last sounds like a good deal. Maybe I'll do that when I put in the new carpet and move the old to my other car (which is in much worse shape and doesn't match;****'s ugly..hehe).

Yeah $20 sounds like a good deal. I'm sure we have some spot remover around here somewhere I'll try first.

Mike, what did you find out about your carpet?

I found out ether can be used as a degreaser, it just gets you high as hell. Sprayed some into the oilpan off of my 305. worked like a charm.
