Welders?

What is a 50amp welder good for?
Can it do body work like shaving door handles?
Can I weld in a new transmission brace with it?

It must be an acient welder i would only use it for parts that dont require strength 50 amps is pretty weak even compared to todays cheapo 115 volt welders which can crank out 20 or 30 more amps than the one. If you have to use it to weld up things like a tranny brace use a multiple pass technique dont do it with one pass it wont be as strong and for that first pass run it as hot as the welder will allow later Dave.

you could shave your door handles with because you would be welding such thin metal. your tranny brace will not holdup unless you weld with more heat..

going multiple passes wont help if you cannot get a deep enough weld. If i were you, hire a welder to buzz up your brace for ya, they wont charge much and you will know that the brace will hold.

I don't know about you guys, but i'd just use fiberglass cloth for shaving door handles. Do it from the inside, then bondo on the outside, sand it down, and presto!

Re: Welders?

I have a 110amp flux mig welder and it is a little to much for body work even when I put it on 80 amp mode. I kinda wanted to get a gas mig welder but I don't want to pay for gas and I work outside for 90% of my work so a messy flux mig is perfect for me.

I'd be concerned of cracking later on doing it that way. Welding in some sheet metal wouldn't have that problem if done right. Use a bunch of tack welds spred out to not overheat the metal and cause warpage.

Re: Welders?

flux cored is not what you would want to use for bodywork.the thinnest possible sized wire you can buy is .030 its best to weld withh .023 and gas.

Re: Welders?

Here's a relatively stupid question. Where do you guys get metal for patches? What gauge do you use?
