new hatch struts are WAY to powerful! holy crap!!

So I just bought a pair of hatch struts and these suckers are way too strong. I hit the hatch release button and the hatch flies open so hard and fast that I'm worried the glass is going to shatter.

Does anyone know of a known good hatch strut to works exactly like the OEM ones did when new? If I cant replace these them I am going to have to unplug the hatch release button so I don't hit it by accident again.

I just bought new hood struts from Rockauto and they are the same way. When I go to open the hood I have to hold onto it or it will fly up pretty fast.

I recall seeing a few different strength struts depending on if there's a spoiler, wiper, combination of either or none. Do they even sell them like that anymore?

I wonder if buying the struts used for no spoiler/wiper would be better for your application?

Is there a tab on the struts?
Do you have De- Ice?
Is your sig pic the car your using them on?

The more powerful struts are for the heavier spoiler & // or De- Ice equipped cars.
Some time ago, there was a thread about the part numbers for standard & more powerful struts for both hood & hatch.
I came in today to look for it, and so far, haven't found it.
Good Luck

I would not have guessed a wiper assembly would weigh it down so much!
I have similar struts on ours, and I swear if there was anything on the hatch it would be launched.

My rear hatch struts are the same way. I try not to hit the release button and use the key instead so that I can hold onto the hatch as it "fly's up". My thought was to order the struts for a trans am with rear wiper so that they will last me longer. Oh well...

Rock auto does have at least 3 flavours. I bought the strongest ones but they are too strong since I have the lighter version aero wing.

lol I envy your flying up hatch. It's a pretty sad sight when I have to lift my hatch up and rest it on my head/back when I'm getting something out of my trunk.

Re: new hatch struts are WAY to powerful! holy crap!!

Mighty Lift supports has a tech line that can help find the right lift for any application. I had to use them to find the right ones for my RV pull down bed. I know autozone sells them, not sure who else does. 1-800-790-LIFT. I've seen a couple of bent hoods from people using supports that are the right size but the wrong pressure. It can be dangerous to you and your car's heath.

I just bought and installed some lift supports from Advance Auto this morning and they work great. I bought the "with spoiler or wiper" version. I used to have to open it at the back and lift up immediately, then hold it up with my head. Now, I can sit in the car, hit the release button and it opens all by itself.

I got the same but from Autozone. Mighty Lift pn# A95024. They work great. It opens by itself without flying up. But I also just have the small RS lip spoiler, not the big Z28 spoiler.

What spoilers do you guys have? I need a pair for my 89 GTA with the heavy wrap around (oem) spoiler. I'm guessing this is where the heavy duty struts/springs work?

I saw these on ebay ending today. Seem reasonable, but I am unsure how well they work. I see so many different stories on brands & performance.

Re: new hatch struts are WAY to powerful! holy crap!!

Not sure why this thread got a bump. But I'll add my 2 cents on the subject. Regardless of which popular brand of lift supports you buy they all tend to come with a 1 year warranty. They used to carry a lifetime warranty. I guess they wised up on all of the exchanges/returns. My hood shocks last just over a year then they start to fail. Coincidence? Not sure if it's the underhood heat that kills them or what. I expressed my concern of the Mighty Lift brand supports to the manager at my local Auto Zone where I buy them. His suggestion was to simply return/exchange them as defective every 11 months. They ask no questions and hand you another set. Hopefully I remember to do this again next year before dropping another 40-50 on another set. So keep your receipts and packaging.

I always put on used ones out of junkyard cars. The hatch struts had different color rings on them by the fatter end to signify the strength.I never figured out what the order was for the different colors

Those are awfully expensive even with the "free" shipping. I just received a pair of Sachs lift supports from Rock Lobster for $20 each +shipping.

I just picked up a pair from Advanced Auto Parts.
Don't seem too bad...plus they are progressive....when they get so far up they slow down....

I searched everywhere in a 50 mile radius and they were the only ones that had them in stock.....
About $70 for the pair....

After reading this thread I replaced mine and thought the same thing, once it gets close to the top it slows down and gently maxes out, spent $70 as well

keep your receipt. Trade them in for new ones before the 1 yr warranty expires.
