1983 Z28 Wiper/Washer motor and pump - upgrade?

I did some searching but couldn't find anything specific...

I have the older style integrated wiper/washer motor and pump. I'm seeing rebuilt ones on fleabay for a whopping 150 bucks....

The wipers work fine, but I've never seen the washer pump work. I want to do one of 2 things since the engine is out of the car and it's easy to access at the moment. Either:

1: Repair the existing pump (never done it before) -or-

2: Upgrade to the newer separate wiper motor and use pump mounted on the washer tank. This old style one is big and bulky compared to the newer style setup. Anyone done this? What parts would I need, and will my existing wiring etc adapt fairly easy?

-Thanks in advance for any help....

I'd fix what ya got. Cheap, and not too hard. I haven't done one in 25 years or so, but I remember going through one once before, and it wasn't rocket science.

I switched to the remote mounted pump, after installing the 4th gen washer resevoir.I then ran the harness up to the stock unit.Wired the harness into shell of the old pump & installed it.Works like a charm.

The later wiper motors use a different connector, so the harness would need to be swaped or modified.I believe there was 3 variations too, 83-down, 84-86/7 & 88-up.I rebuilt/replaced mine countless times.

Not as easy as it sounds. No newer 84 wiper motor will bolt up without work.

Second 82-83 wipers send power through wiper switch. Later cars switches ground the motor.

If motor is out you can graft a section of firewall in so you can mount a later style wiper motor

Well, that just convinced me to fix the pump! Not messing with grafting my firewall, and since the motor works... Looks like Rock Auto it is guys! Thanks a lot for the info!

Good luck with your rebuild. If you think of it, take some photos along the way, and post back in this thread so we can all see how it turns out.

What exactly ARE the options when it comes to the OEM stuff? I've got parts from several different cars combined under my hood and have no idea which style wiper motor/pump assembly would be ordered over the counter as a replacement. The 1986 V6 chassis that's the current roller had a resevoir/pump housing on the firewall along side the wiper motor assembly. I can't recall the 86 IROC having such an item. Is there a distinct difference between a pulse and non-pulse assembly? I've seen 2 connector and 3 connector styles listed for the same year as well.

ugh, mine just kinda spits the fluid randomly and keeps doing it when the wipers are on all the time!

Was hoping it'd be as simple as just bolting in the newer style. Figures.

84 1LE, have any pics of what you did?

Bump. Been two years and I still haven't wired in a new pump! Anyone with good instruction on how to add an external pump to bypass the awful 82/83 internal one?

Well better late than never. Not my fault this site sometimes doesn't send me replys to a post...Anyway.
You can just see the pump & the tip of the hose.

Where pump harness connects, routed on frame rail.Hose is routed inside fender, into cowl, exits at center w/ single nozzle .
