Different Quality Paint Jobs

So I am trying to understand what effects longevity of a paint job, overall quality and shine and so on and so forth. Can someone point me to an article to understand such.... Different paint type and style... Why is MAACO cheaper? Whats the difference between a $1000 MAACO job and a $5000 independent body shop job... etc..

Mechanically i have a ton of knowledge. Body work i dont understand, before i let someone touch my car i want to understand it...
