T-Top Storage Racks

Has anyone out there found an alternate system for storing the T-tops securely in the trunk? Other than the GM sack that came with the cars, which is effective, but takes forever to get hooked up.(then the zippers tear out)
Hopefully by springtime I will have come up with something, but it never hurts to ask. Anyone?

I have read where some cars got some sort of rack that mounts the t-tops vertical in the storage compartment in the rear... My friends Olds Cutlass had them that way...

I believe I have seen somewhere the factory offered a rack in place of the bag, but I do not know which years or anything.

My 2000 TA has pieces mounted in the bottom of the storage compartment that the tops slide into. No reason these wouldn't work. As far as problems getting the tops into the bags and zippers tearing our, the bags for my 85 used velcro to attach. Still a b**** to slide the tops in when they're hot, though.

The 91 Firebird Owners manual shows an optional ttop rack in the tire storage well, but I have yet to have heard of anyone having one. The earlier thirdgens used Velcro bags with two pockets, in my experiance the zipper bags work better.
Also as mentioned 4th gens with ttops have racks in the back to store them.

I actually had a cutsom Velcor bag made for mine. I had an extra bag laying around from a parts car & took it to my Upholster & asked that it be mad about 1" larger all the way around. It is much easlier now to work with..

Hmm. The velcro must have been an option. My original 85 bag was a zipper, and I've seen older zipper bags too.

Anyway, one of these days I'm going to try to rig up a strap system so I can strap a top to the backside of the front seats. My back area sorta has a pile of amps and subs in the way.

Somebody a long time ago on the old tech boards made and sold a rack that mounted in the rear area that securely held the t-tops and spaced them apart so they didn't touch each other. Maybe some other TGO vet can remember that guy's name..? I never really payed attention because I don't have a t-top car, but I remember the hoopla about it.

Larry was the guy selling the ttop racks, but thats long since been done.

The velcro bags were used from 82 until at least 85, maybe into 86. The zipper design stayed around till 92. Swapping to the zipper bag is VERY common. I haven't heard anyone other than on here that liked the velcro bag. I've also noticed that the velcro bags have both the GM logo and a Fisher body logo, the zipper bags I've seen have all had only the GM logo. Both types have had the ttop instruction sheet on the inside of the bag. 2nd gen cars apparently used two seperate bags, I'm not sure if the 4th gens ever used bags to store the ttops.

I have the zipper bag, and i hate it. I wish i had a 4th gen style support for the ttops...my solution....i have about 3-4 towels in the trunk, and i just put the tops down into the farmost bottom part of the trunk, stand them up on the rubber part, and cover and separate them using the towels. I did this all last spring and summer...seems to work fine...hell of alot easier getting to them and taking them out or putting them in there.

Yeah, 4thGen racks would be nice, and they'll fit with some 'adjusting', but what happens once I move the battery (or install a certian blue bottle?
Maybe it's time to start fab'ing something. Or call the dealer and get a new bag once spring rolls around.
