Daytona Style Hood Resto
Hi guys,
I was encouraged to put more of my project on the site, so here goes. I bought this hood second hand over the summer, and had to mod the hinges a bit so they'd fit nice. I was happy with it, except for the minor dings and scratches all over the hood. So, I ran it the way it was over the summer, but here I go refinishing it. First picture is before sanding, second is right after the sanding, third is after a wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust. The clear coat is at very least good and scratched up. The holes on either side are for my hood pins. Still haven't decided on whether I will return it to glossy black, go with a satin black, or perhaps body color. No idea yet. Had also thought of doing glossy black with a nice vinyl down one side with the Chevy bowtie and the "Heartbeat of America" logo. Anyway, first things first here's the clear coat sand down, with more to follow soon.

Forgot to add, this is what the hood looks like on the car, except I did manage to get the edges flush with the fenders after some hood pin adjustment.

i always liked those hoods. it looks good on your car.
maybe a carbon fiber wrap would look good on it?
edit; i wasnt trying to show a charger, just the wrap.

Thanks! Never considered doing a wrap on it, but maybe I'll look into it. That's a cool product (cool charger too).

Re: Daytona Style Hood Resto
Part two, I filled in some of the chips on the cowl and the edges of the hood. Not as much as I thought actually, a lot of the imperfections came out in the initial sanding. Still haven't decided on color or finish. I've thought of trying that plasti-dip product, because I could essentially peel it off if I didn't like the matte finish of it. I've got a friend who has done his whole car in it, it's really tough stuff (don't get gasoline on it though, it melts away). Anyway, here's where I'm at.

Part three. Sanded down the body filler on the hood, turned out alright. The main cuts and scratches are erased anyway, which is great. I don't think the hood was perfect even from the factory (wavy in spots) but I'm happy with the filler job. First pic is the filler sanded down, second is the first shot of primer. More when the primer is sanded down and filled where need be.

Re: Daytona Style Hood Resto
Ok, did a bit more sanding and filler this weekend for the dings and scratches, shot it in primer again. I think it looks alright, the flatness of the primer really brings up the lines in the hood and cowl. This makes me want to go with a flat black, like the plasti-dip product. I will also be doing the little metal pads for the hood pins in the flat black, so the only chrome will be the four screws on each pad, and the pin that crosses it. Don't like a lot of chrome on these cars (except under the hood). Any suggestions? Still debating on a cool vinyl, maybe in gold to match the GFX. Anyhow, here's what it looks like now, waiting for paint or plasti-dip.

For what it's worth, I'm in the same situation with my new hood. It's still in the EDP paint (matte black) and while I've always liked the look of a black hood on most cars, I'm starting to think it's a way of cheaping out regarding refinishing. It also attracts a certain amount of attention in that it stands out. I prefer the sleeper look as long as I can get away with it and I think body colour is the way to go.

Re: Daytona Style Hood Resto
Hi, thanks for the suggestions guys. I've seen those turbo hoods before with the louvers and vents cut in. I'm not sure about the vents, and I'm sure that I don't want the louvers. I like the idea of having the openings in the cowl, just for the functional air intake aspect of it. Don't like the look of it though. Anyhow, my only concern with going with body color is paint matching. I've bought body code paint in the past and it matched ok for under the hood, but I don't know if I want to do the whole hood if it doesn't match perfect. Tough paint to match this Dark Goldwing Metallic. I think it would look great though ;-)

Re: Daytona Style Hood Resto
I suppose another option is to make it a "shaker" hood. Anyone done this before? I think it would be cool, and more importantly functional. What air cleaner would one use for that?

some people dont like the cut outs on the sides because water can get in there. i guess theres a mesh you can epoxy on the inside if you wanted to?
IDK about the shaker? its such a nice hood to cut up.
why dont you do a functional cold air intake from the rear cowl area? something like this;

Thanks for the suggestions, I love that air pan idea! I wonder if any stock Carb cars came with that, be cool to have a Chevy one. I'll look into that. You're right, it is too nice to chop up. Thanks guys, keep the ideas coming!
