changing window motor > spring oops

hi i am installing a new window motor drivers side , i started this job along time ago but had the wrong parts delivered and never got round to it - its not being used at the mo anyways. ive gone back to it to find the spring has jumped off, im wondering which way in it goes, from what i remember (window up) the plate the motor bolts too would naturally spring up to the glass if let go is this right ?
