Fuel pump. Cut lines??

Fuel pump. Cut lines??
Hey guys I have a 1991 camaro. Originally with a 3.1 v6 and now has a tbi 350. I need to replace my fuel pump. I am good at fab work so I chose to make the trap door. I got to the fuel pump but it won't come out with the lines on it. I was wondering if theirs a way to dis connect the lines. Or if you can cut and clamp. What to do?? Any info greatly appreciated

This is probably the wrong area to post this question in but, here is a nice step by step guide.

And yes, you do have to cut the lines.

I have done this..great idea..and before all you bashers start...no! It absolutely positively!!! Does not hurt the structure of the car..and as for the fuel lines cut...yes a compression fitting will be just fine!! They are designed to handle a whole lot more pressure than your fuel pump puts out! I would rather be able to change my pump in 15 minutes or less than have to take half the back end of my car apart.

Not a hater or a basher, but I believe in doing it correctly. It's obviously too late now, but why do so many people say that they want to swap the fuel pump in 15 minutes when this isn't a regular project. I agree that an easier option needs to be available if the change needs to be done annually, etc. But if the pump wasn't replaced but once in 20+ years, take the time to do it correctly!

Scott, once upon a time I was the guy on the side of the road at night with a bad fuel pump..tow truck to take it to my house was $95...car was maybe 10 miles from home..at the time,I had barely enough money to drop $85 for the new pump..had no option but to fix it where it sat..try that once and tell me how much you prefer the (right) way..

Me personally, I would never do this to my cars. But I understand why people do. I agree with Scott if you are going to do it, do it right. But, I will not bash the people that have or will do it. Everybody has their own reason for doing it. Although if I was stuck on the side of the road miles from my house, I would wish I had an access door too.

In the same line of thinking, I've heard of people cutting the wires to the power antenna (the wires that go through the body plug) so they can get the antenna unit out of the wheel opening. The proper way is to unplug the antenna from the radio and then the entire harness pulls right out. The shortcut is simpler, but it isn't correct.

I ended up being the guy to have to fix this trap door that one of the prev. owners put in. It's a lot more work to repair than pulling the tank.

Re: Fuel pump. Cut lines??
I should pull my tank and fuel pump asy it is a hi pro Holley 255ltr fuel pump with no issues.. It has been there since 97 do I continue to TRUST IT???
The rear end is coming out anyhow for upgrade but to do this mod the correct way with riveting or bolting an access panel in place seems like a good idea I would use -8 and -10 braided steel fuel line with quick disconnect fittings. NOT available in 1997 I have a roll cage and sub frame connectors so structural integrity is not a problem...

Re: Fuel pump. Cut lines??
Yep,sure are...probably a lot more access doors done than not...some are for sure hack jobs..I have seen some nightmares done to these cars...but honestly,an access door done neatly is the correct way...2-3 hours? So what, like I said in my previous comment, how many farmers do you see ploughing fields with a mule?....humans evolve,we learn better ways to do things..if we didn't,we would still be knuckle dragging Neanderthals...my .02..(:

Nothing right about cutting a hole in your car and then having a bunch of compression fittings that can potentially leak. It's your car, do what you want. But if I am changing the boiler in my house I am not going to blast a giant hole through the foundation to get the old one out.

Funny how this always turns into "right, or wrong" way to do it. I think it's more of a purist way or custom way. Cuz honestly any mod done to our cars would be "the wrong way" now doing a particular mod I do agree can be done wrong... Oh so wrong. But there are really smart creative people who have made wonderful improvements to or cars. If you want to call them "wrong" have them post a pic of how they did their mod THEN bash or compliment them..... Just sayin.
