spray paintin my car

how nice of a job can I possably do with spray paint, I will sand and prep the whole body and prime it, but I can't afford to have it painted for real and I live in florida and its wet here, my car is half primed already and I'm worried about rust, I want to use some kind of a clear coat and I want it to look nice, not show car nice, but just nice.

I know a freind that did that to his rice(civic). He painted it white with two red raceing stripes. It looked all right for a while but a few months go by and that white turned in to yellow. This made the whole car look like **** on $hit in a rice bowl. Maybe if you get a different brand of paint a different color but I would rather have old faded original paint that to put myself through all that.

do you think deep red would mess up any, or turn orange, I'll be using the scratch paint from discount auto parts.

My friends and I did this to his 85 TA. It was a black and gold that the previous owner hadn't taken care of the paint, the clearcoast was flaking it was all faded and ugly as sh*t. So we sanded it down, primered, painted and clearcoated; panel b panel. All with spray cans. Looked pretty decent (by all means not a show car nice, but pretty good) as long as you sanded alittle before each coat.

I would say for the price of all the masking tape, paper, and cases of paint. Your better off with macco (or how ever you spell thire company name) Just do some of the prep work your self and have then spray it. yeah good idea...

Renting an air compresser and buying real auto paint for it should be cheaper than a body shop, but more expensive that spray paint.

Painitng a car yourself for the first time is always a learning experience. It depends on how bad your temper is.

BULL$HIT!!! Paint that thing with what ever color they have most of!!! GO FOR IT!!! That's what I'm gonna do. I think satin black. Just watch out for runs!!!

I used to paint show cars, and I have an '81 Elcamino that is beautiful, so I think that I can have a little fun with my T/A.

a paint job with 2 coats of clear will only run me $200, that doesn't sound right, will it flake off in a year or what.

I say if you are going to cut corners... you better go all the way. There is a ***** in my neighbourhood that painted his car with a roller.

If you paint it with those spray cans it will only look descent at a distance. If you do go that route try to use one can to lightly cover the entire car. I have done this with cars and I found two major problems. One is that it cost about as much for the spray cans as a gallon of cheap automotive enamel. The other is that no two cans are exactly the same color. When I did it I ended up having to buy about 6-8 cans, which is more than any store stocked. Getting them in different shipments really made things bad. The paint varied so much you had to stand 15 feet or more away to not notice it. I guess its better than rust or primered parts but as suggested, you would be better off doing a little prep work yourself and getting a low-dollar paint job done professionally. If you sand the entire car yourself even a cheap paint job will last a while. Usually what causes the cheap paint jobs to flake off is a lack of sanding and prep. Its the sanding and prep that takes time, which most of what you are paying for in a good job is time. At best for $200 you may get 1 sheet of sandpaper ran across your car or possibly just a liquid prep misted across it. Neither is even close to being enough.

Even better is go to Sherwin Williams and get the denim texturing kit or maybe even sponge paint it.

Seriously you're better off going to an Earl Screibs or Macco and paying $2-300 dollars then trying to rattle can it. It will look like hell. Even if the Macco job flakes off in 2 years you've at least bought yourself time to save up for a real paint job.

Duplicolor all the way LoL! (my camaro, def. no show,,,or go, it just runs lol)

http://www.deadbird.org/b/cam.jpg

One good thing about spray paint, duplicolor in particular, is since it's laquer, it dries super fast, it can be rubbed out (unlike enamel paints), and it's very thin & easily sandable later. For temporary just to seal up the primer to prevent rust, it's not that bad of an idea. My camaro has been spray painted for well over a year now and, if I actually took care of it, it would look as good close up as a standard urethane, single stage paint job. I spent $35 painting down both sides of the car. The replacement bumper was 'close enough' so I didn't worry about it. To finish he hood, rear deck & around the windshield would run probably close to another $25-30. Using duplicolor, if you decide the spraybomb route) will save you lots of elbow grease when it comes time to sand for a real paint job later down the road. all the cans have matched color so far too...

Do at the others have suggested. Do the prep yourself and do a good job, remove locks, handles outer window sweeps, lights, body molding...etc. Then take it to Macco and get a $200 single stage paint job.
You live in Florida...spray paint wouldn't last a month in the weather down there. I live in Georgia..I know what the extreme sun does to paint.
If you opt to do it yourself it will cost about $300 for primer, color and clear, then there's the cost of a gun (you can get a good one from Harbor Freight for $50), renting/borrowing a compressor...then there's the little matter of a forced air respirator $500, but there is a very cheap and safe way around that.

Morley's right.
Do the prep yourself and do a good job
You said something very funny. You want to paint your car with
the scratch paint from discount auto parts
but wonder whether the maaco paint job is gonna
flake off in a year or what
If you are going to put the time and effort into prepping it right, like you said you were going to, and then put garbage paint all over it, you are wasting your time. Maaco/Schieb paint jobs are cheap, but "good enough" paint jobs to get your car on the road and last a decent amount of time too....if you prep it well. And you were gonna do that already anyways......

How 'bout some color tinted primer. I think the off white color that people use looks pretty sharp. One guy around here had his truck done in lime green primer and it didn't look too bad.
