180 Speedo for Firebirds

anyone interested??? I am posting the template here, you NEED a 140 Speedo for it to work properly.

I can post a higher resolution pic here or I can e-mail it to you. The full size image is about 80K in JPG so I thought it was too large to post.

You need the speedo & the little circut board driver, thats it, about 6 screws to change one. (once you have the IP out.)

Just a NOTE, I could not find an Exact Match on the Font, so I used my Formula Font that I created.

Do you think you could make one for metric cars? People always look at mine and say your car only goes to 220 km/h my (insert 4-banger import here) can go to 260! That always pisses me off.

CheezX,
If you Could either Scan a picture of your Speedo, or take a picture of it, I might be able to do something with it. I would prefer a nice scan of the actual speedo, but that would mean taking apart your dash.

You have to buy a 140 Speedo from a salvage yard. The Circut board driver resides behind the speedo. I think its on the top, but I might be wrong. There is only one behind the speedo. If you ever take one apart, you will see what I am talking about.

I am uploading the pix & pages to my Formula website. To get to it, go to http://www.3rdgenformula.com (about 1/2 way down on main menu page) Click on "modifying your Formula". Then find "White face gages" link on the left.

I just posted a new 105 speedo for all you 85Mph speedo guys too.

thanks for the conversions, John...

quick question: by swapping out speedos with another (say a 120 to a 140, incl. the circuit board) will that actually have the correct calibration. will 30mph on the speedo actually be 30mph on the road?

what about an swapping an 85 with a 120 or 140?

thanks...

When you do a swap, all you need is the speedo & the "card" or circut board, and it should have the correct calebration. The ONLY differences I have found from each of the speedos I have is apparently the circutboard. and you should have it.

I went from a 85 -> 120 -> 140 as I scrounged in salvage yards for them You can actually dissassemble the pieces & switch your odometers so they have the correct milage.

Everything is interchangable from 1987-1992 is confirmed. I do not have an 1986, but I assume it is the same. 1985, though, I have been told is mechanical.

there is a junk yard about 45min from where im at, and i thought id just call to see if they had that specific year.

thanks...

Formulas, T/A's & GTA's

It all depends on the application:

Actually it is more dependant on the Engine/Transmission/rear axel ratio than the model of car.

WHILE you are there, try and get one from a 350 TPI, that way you can get the 8K tach to boot.

Instead of posting it here, visit my web site. After the Splash page, a little more than half way down on the main menu page there is a link that states "Speedometer / Tachometer Combinations - All Years" click on it and it will tell you which cars have it.

almost forgot: http://www.3rdgenformula.com

hope that helps

Trent257, go to my web page, I already did it. I got tired of e-mailing.

http://www.3rdgenformula.com after the splash page go to "modifying your Formula" (about 1/2 way down on left). Then look for the white face gages.

I could make a Camaro one, but I would need a nice scan of the original gage first. It will take me a while to do it.

Deepsouth,
If you can get me a nice high res scan of the speedo I can do it. Keep in mind I will be using my Formula font for the numbers. Only a scan will work for accuracy. Photos will not work as well.

If I can find a close font, I will use it instead of my Formula Font.

e-mail is fine, Just get me a nice hi-res scan, 200 DPI to 300 dpi will be perfect. give me some time to actualy do it, it takes me a little time to get it just right.

I have DSL so a 1 MB file takes less than a min.

I do have the templates for the rest of the gages, its a matter of getting them on the web site. They need to be converted into jpg of gif. That too will take a little while before I can get them on there.

I figure now that the cat is out of the bag, everyone will want me to post them. I hear your calling Just gimme some time. I am engaged & REALLY busy.

The firebird templates were really simple & straight forward. All I had to do was make a little back plate out of .040" plex & lay the template over that. I actually used a heaver paper because it was stiffer. "card stock"

I have noooo idea how Camaros work. The 'bird shines light through the back. I think some of the early camaros used a reflection type where they were made of sheetmetal.

Could you make templates for white faces on the other gauges also?

I have the gages already made just not posted.

As for nite time, it is up to you, there are many options, it just depends on how you do it.

I thought about taking another print on clear transparency plastic & printing a bird, or even a reverse of the top oiece so you would only see where the didgets were.

I changed the color of my gage needles so they were black. Take a razorblade & scrape off the orange paint, then take some black magic marker & paint the bottome side to make them black.

What kind of paper did u use, and the light comes from the back right. I was thinking of putting a bird where the bright light signal was and making it light up when on.

I simply used card stock paper. It is heavy like construction paper but it has a smooth surface like premium paper. Anything that you can hold up to a light & see thru should work.

regular Typing paper would definately need some sort of clear plastic back because it is flimsey
