To remove the plastic piece you need to take off the black cover that is in front of it. It has about eight hex screw holding it in (can't remember what size). After you get that off the plastic piece comes off with about six small bolts. These also hold an a metal piece that goes around the gauges. Be extra careful with the needles too.

I'm not sure where you can buy one but my guess would be a junkyard or Classic Industries.

Hope this helps,
Matt

Actually since you have an 86 you should need a 5.5mm & a 7mm nutdrivers.

Take off the top dash pad, To do so remove the 4 long screws in the defronster vent. Second remove the screws from underneeth the dash pad. Remove dash pad, and be careful when pulling it back, because this is a common time to break off the stubs that hold on the speaker grills.

Remove the right passenger trim piece 9under the dash pocket. Should be 3 (7mm) screws

Remove the 2 (7mm) from under the trim piece on the driver side where the Running light switch goes for Trans Am's

Remove the screws around the dark gray trim piece

Remove the dash panel (NOT the GOLD screws)

You may have to lower your tilt steering to its lowest level to get some of this out. AND remove the Tilt steering lever. Simply uscrew it.

Once you have the Instruments out then you can work on it easily.

IF you have all Indicator lights, you might have a Speedometer cable. If your car has the gage package you should not have a speedo cable.

Hope this helps
John
