how would i do this....?

what's up, i have an 85 ta, with an 85 mph speedo...i want to swap it for the 145. mainly because they look so much better than the one i have..but it's nice to know how fast you're really going too! anyway, my speedo is mechanical, and it's a 5 speed. so how could i convert to the electronic 145 cluster? and would all the other gauges work with out a problem? thanks a lot

I have an idea that I KNOW would work but it is more work than you are probably wuilling to do. Buy an 86-92 Firebird (wrecked) with everything on it that you want, like the 145 speedo, and convert everything over, including the dash wiring. It sounds like a big difficult PITA, and it is, BUT, it is doable, and you would know more about your car than most people.

Be a GREAT time to convert to TPI if you do not already have it.

Somehow I think that is not an answer you wanted to hear.

On the other hand you might be able to isolate the circut that the speedo works on, FOR SURE you would need the transmission sender, the wires going to the speedo and the speedo & the electronic stuff inside. I think it might work if you got that stuff. Because I know my speedo seems to work fine without the computer. When I bought my car I had a friend tow me with his suburbon and my batt was dead dead dead, and the speedo still worked. Still would be a PITA.

Can you use a mechanical 145 speedo? There's one for sale on the classified board. It's from an IROC. Are they different than T/A speedo's? https://www.thirdgen.org/internal/cl...cfm?adid=12594

If you can't use an IROC speedo, they do sell an electronic speed sensor adapter. It screws into the trans, then the cable screws into it. I guess you'd have to run wires from there to the new tach.

Have you checked under your car on the transmission to see if it's cable driven or has a vss (speed sensor)? If it has the vss, any newer 140 speedo will work.
