What car for LSX T56. A currently auto car or manual car?
Ok guys. Here's my set back.
I have a 91 z28 that has great paint and body work. That body is completely straight without a dent. It was painted about 2 years ago and looks great. The car is a 305 Auto. I also have a 88 iroc 350 5 speed. The car has plenty of dings, dents and web cracking on the nose. However, the car looks good from 10 feet away. I feel as if it needs to be painted.
I am going to get a LS2 T56 and it is going in one of the two cars. I have been told to just put it in the Iroc since it already has the pedals, holes cut and other manual conversion parts. I'm most concerned about cutting the holes into the auto car. Is that a big enough obstacle to sway me away from putting the LS2/T56 in the 1991 Z28?
I am not a mechanic; however I am very mechanically inclined. What ever car doesn't get the LSX will be sold.
What are your thoughts?
I personally think the auto to manual swap would be relatively easy. And it just makes more sense to put that drivetrain in a nicer car, knowing I won't have to pay 4-6k later down the road for paint.
I posted here since it pertains to body/paint work aswell as body modifications.

I love your 91, if I can sell my vette, I've been thinking about contacting you about it.
I would do the 88. It's already been cut up and modded,so IMHO, keep the 91 stock and bust out the cutters and the sawzall for the 88. LOL.

I would use your 91. It is a much nicer car to start with. Holes aren't too hard to cut. I have done it.

91 fer sure.
I had my 88 painted a year beforehand on my ls swap.
Also did the auto to manual swap. Not hard at all and as long as you take the proper precautions, you won't damage your paint.
It all comes down to whatever car you like more.

I would put the LS2/T56 in the 91. The auto to manual conversion has been done many times, I'm sure you could find all the info on here to make it easy. It's so much cheaper to start with the body work already done, you can't go wrong with that choice.
Too bad you can't keep both cars, use the 91 as a weekend cruiser/show car and put the LS2/T56 in the IROC and have fun with it without worrying about every little scratch and ding.

I am all about cost (hence if money is not object ignore), so I would sell the 91, t5, and 350 for more making it more worth putting in the 88... if you are more for looking great with an awesome machine, then it would be more cost to paint the 88 after modding it, making the 91 the better choice. I don't care so much about the looks, but power and reliability while saving a buck where I can is what I am all about. Good luck and I hope you are happy with whatever decision you come up with.

I say the 91 as cutting the holes is stupid simple. Just remember on the 88 the hole for the shifter has to be lengthened as the t56 is 2 inches farther back.
