Pop Mech. On Power Hatch

my 88 camaro has a power motor to control the hatch. i was wondering how i would go about putting in a button to pop the hatch from the drivers seat. is it possible?

The power hatch release was an option in 90-92 so it should be possible. You would probably have to look at one and see how it's wired.

Camaro's don't have the power hatch release?? HEH Learn somethin new everyday!
BTW, if you didn't know, I think all the Firebirds w/ the electric hatch have it, (don't quote me though) maybe you can look @ a junkyard firebird.

hrmm, i wouldnt think i could just toss on some wires, the only way to open the hatch is to use a key and that inturn turns something that pops the hatch open and than the hatch motor comes up. excuse me for the lack of knowledge and terms. junk yards around here dont like to carry and F-Body anythings. oh well, i'll keep looking i guess.

that's a shame, there are sooooo many f-bodies in the local junk yards here in the L.A. area. Well at least you don't have to look at the sight of all those deceased f-bodies

Hell yeah...there are boatloads of thirdgens around here. Do you go to the ones in Sunland??

Tyler, you might want to try to dig up some info on hatch motors. Maybe the ones with release switches are different from the non-switch ones. But...if they are the same there should be a way to rig the switch. Try a parts store and see if they ask "with or w/out power switch".

From what I have found the latch mechs are pretty much the same. The biggest difference between latches is how they mount to the chasis. ALL you need is a power release, there is only one bolt holding it on. I have taken non-power release hatches from the junk yard and installed the power release latch I had on them. If I remember correctly I installed a power release solinoid from a 83 T/A on a 92 Firebird hatch mech.

Every Camaro/Firebird from 1986-92 has the power pulldown, not all of them have the electic release. Check my artical in the tech section for exact info. It should be pretty close to identical for your car. You might not have the wiring, and the artical is directed towards 90-92 Firebirds.

Hey guys if all your talking about is doing it from the drivers seat my 88 Iroc has is. The switch just pulls back, it's between the window switches on the console. Make sure that if you rig one up that you can't open it while in gear.

That's a good point. The switch only works if the ignition is off, or if its on, the parking break is set. Oh yea, Cali, I do go to the sunland ones, it just depressed me the last time I went. (Maybe because I didn't find anything I wanted)

Hey guys in Los Angeles area are there any good clubs around. I've gone to some of the sun valley recker yards and there just too big of a pain to get any good parts. The sensor for my switch went bad and while driving down the 210 I bumped it, both windows down. Lost every light inside that wasn't bolted down and almoast lost the hatch. :-( . Good luck trying to rig one.

I have a 89 firebird, which didn't have the power hatch release. The parts I needed were:

1) Release button to fit in console
2) Relay which plugs into some wiring behind the console
3) Hatch release solenoid
4) Another relay which controls the pulldown mechanism

All the other bits were present in the car.
Unfortunately the wiring that controls the pulldown mechanism is tied into my alarm system. When I added the relay to the pulldown wiring this made my alarm think the hatch was always open !

Camaro's have em too...My 87 IROC has the release between the P-window switches. My 92 T/A Has it on the dash above the radio.
