Anyone ever install a HUD?

I am considering installing a HUD (Heads Up Display) in my Formula. I know there is an aftermarket company making them. Just wanted to know if anyone has ever installed one

visit http://www.defi-shop.com/ if you want to see some. Unfortunately for us in the states they only have 1 HUD, for Canada & other countries using Metric they have 2.

If i were you i would try to find a junked Pontiac Montana and get the HUD from that, it will be much cheaper.

I thought about going with the OEM one from a Grand Prix or a Montana, Unfortunately what I want to use it for is a Tachometer. I am not sure if the GM stock ones can be used that way.

It should be pretty straigt forward. I need to know how many pulses the speedo runs at.

Thanks

John

I was thinking of putting in one frm a Vette when I put in my 4thgen dash and console. That way I could get all the signals from the speedo and inside the dash to run it. Big question is, who has the schematics for it? I would assume those are considered a system...do they require other systems to be present for correct operation and boot-up, etc. Then again maybe all it requires is input from the gage cluster, they appear to boot in the same way...also, is the angle of the windshield going to be ***** enough to project the image of the HUD? Unless I find a HUD cheap, I'd probably pass, honestly. I thought about it too...that would be a pretty kickass idea. I was toying with that idea...if I ever go through with it I'll be sure to post it. Same goes with the ABS thirdgen swap.

It is hard to say how things are wired in, Usually, from my experience, GM has been going more and more to self contained Systems. you could more thanlikely install one from a vette if you found out a few things.
1) is the vettes pulses from the speedo the same as ours?
2) you would almost have to see one out of a car to really determine how to install it.

There are exceptions to all rules, but for the most part GM tries to use similar parts whenever they can. Take for instance component CD players granted it is DELCO, but it still applies.

All the mechanisms within a bracket of years ar virtually interchangable. For instance, I have a friend with a Regal, I picked up a CD player from a guy, off an 88 Regal, the mech is the same as my 90 RIV, and some 92 Oldsmobiles, with the CD player. Consider that you cannot simply plug any one of these CDplayers from one car to the next, but he Mechanism inside is the same. You unplyg things inside and install the new one.

I woud imagine GM has dome things similar to the VETTE HUD. I know from looking at Instrument panels on 90 RIV and my buddys 94 Bravada, and possibly the Digital dashs in the TA/GTA's all use very similar circutry. They all have the same segments, now they are not interchangable like the CD mechs, but for the most part they opperate very much alike. I would not be a bit supprised if they used the same chips etc, just layed out differently.

My point: When you have an opion like HUD, not every car is going to get it. so you design something that a single person on the line can install it or not install it. chances are it is a single self contained unit with a plug, or two. All it needs is4 wires: speedo, Ground, dash light power, and 12V, thats it. if they decided to go crazy and moke it more complex, maybe, but I think there is a better chance it would plug rith in as soon as you found out some basics.

(stepping off the soapbox)

John

I don't know about the angle, but the inside of the glass on HUD-equipped cars has to be specially coated in order to get the image to show up properly.

You will get some reflection from any windshield. If you follow the link on my first post, there seems to be something that DEFI sends with the HUD to place in your field of vision.

If you have ever been blinded by the sun through your windhield shining on your dashpad then you know what I am talking about. there is SOME reflection.

At night it would work better for obvious reasons. BUT it still should work.

It doesn't work with regular glass. I have a HUD in one of my cars. When the windshield was replaced after an accudent, the wrong glass was used and the image was almost impossible to see.

OMG I cannot believe the website blocked out the word I used to describe the angle of the windshield...***** is not a bad word at all! Just had to bring it up.

Yeah, maybe the HUD is a direct bolt-in. If I can get some schematics from a 2000 Vette with one we could look and see. Too bad I no longer work at University Chevrolet.

Now that you bring it up I agree about the windshield...I think it uses a special kind of tint on the inside, very light to pick up and amplify or reflect the image given by the HUD. Angle does make a difference from what I understand...you cannot see the image unless you are sitting in the correct spot in the driver's seat. Guess we need to find out what kinda 'tint' that is.

APEIRON, I would take it back to the people that installed your windshield and DEMAND that they install the correct windshield.

Just my opinion.

The DFI one is hooked up like a tach or electronic speedo. It's aftermarket honda stuff. Although it's pretty cool and has possibities.

Also the HUD on C5's displays more than tach and speedo. It's got anonther for water temp/oil temp/oil pressure/fuel/idiot lights/and something else. It cycles through those at the touch of a button. Bar tach and digital speedo are always displayed.

THat little unit on e-bay seems like a cool idea... I was thinking actually that with the Formula Hood, I could put some digital displays outside for Speed and Tach, and a shift light...

Then I do not need to worry about the reflectiveness of my windshield.
