What kind of tires should I get?

Okay, I need to replace my rear tires before winter. What are the good brands? I don't want anything too expensive, but I don't want some cheap crap that won't last. Any help is appreciated. And if this isn't on the right board, sorry, but I didn't know where to post it. Thanks.

This might sound strange but I have had GREAT luck with Firestones, (Firehawk FTX) only pay about $100 ea, for the 245-50R16

I have also had an inexpensive Goodyear same size from Walmart about the same price, unfortunately the traction sucks, I can do burnouts all day long. I would rather have something that grabs the pavement.

I have a set of 4 BF Goodrich on my 67 Riv, (they are 10 years old). they are ok. 235-60R15

I like My Michelins on my 90 Riv too.

The only tires I have ever had a bunch of problems with is General Tire. Had them on an old 83 Riv, they wore quick, and I had a lumpy ride.

I don't know what size your using for your RS.

They are 215/60/R16's that I need. Thanks for the tips. Damn, I didn't realize how expensive this could get. I guess exhaust and new front end will have to wait til Spring.

The 215/60/R16's are alot cheeper for tires. I personally like the profile of the 245/50/R16's. those are the tires that came on the performace suspension cars like the GTA, Formula, IROC, Z28 that had the top level performance suspension.

If you are planning on driving in snow get the narrower 215's though. Wide tires are crap in the snow, narrow is better.

You may want to lookat Yokahoma's I have some 245/50R/16's on my '88 IROC. They are model# S306 They are only carried by Discount Tires and they are $95/each. Good compund, tread desgin is killer for a tire under $100 and they have have excellent dry and wet traction.

When I bought my car it had bf goodrich comp t/as on the front and kelly chargers on the back. The kelly chargers are excellent dry launch tires and the comp t/as seem to do well in cornering.

Has anyone had any experience with comp t/as on the rear? I'd like to get some to replace the kelly chargers (it rains alot around here). How much do they run and what do they feel like?

Im took the front end off of my Z and it was kind of a pain in the *** to do. Had to take off one fender, front clip, inner front end panel, honeycomb panel, and headlights. I have been checking the prices of all of the things i needed for mine and the grand total is around 700 bucks, which includes, drivers side fender, front end panel, front gfx, new clear sidemarkers, new front directionals, and 4 brand new cool blue headlights. You might also want to change anything else that looks old and rusted too. i checked on headlight adjusting screws and they are discontinued by dealers, but new screws from a hardware store would do. In regards to your tires..16 inch Toyo Proxies, they are excellent mabye a little pricy though.

I second the Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712's. I have those on my car, and my sis has em on her 91 Z. She has not had any problems with them, even in wet weather. The wet traction is excellent, as well as the dry traction. I plan on buying another set when these wear out.

Go with the 245/50 anyway. My 91 RS had them when I got it. You can see pic of car with them on it. I currently have a set of the 215 on there from a wrecked rs that I bought for parts while I am refinishing my wheels. 215's suck for handling and hard take off's. Can't wait to put my 245's back on. Car handled MUCH better with the 245's. Side by side the 245s were about a half inch taller than the 215s. Get a nice looking tread pattern too and you will really like the difference in your car. You have a good looking car so go ahead and make it a great looking car.

you'll probably laugh at this: on my old 86 trans am, I had a set of Cooper 215/60 snow tires that I mounted on the stock rims. sucky handling on dry pavement, but when it snowed (like it so often does here in jersey), it was nice to be able to go somplace. hehe...on the highway at like 75 with such big snow tires is an interesting experience. the z28 now has 235s and they are horrible in the snow.
