Steering Column!!! Help!
The turn signal lever on my 84 firebird broke off and I was told I had to get a new steering column. Is this true? Can I do it myself by getting one at a Junkyard? How hard it is. Please help before I get pulled over! Thanks

you don't need a new steering column....you just need a new turnsignal assembly for ityouwill have to get into the steering column to swap them out.No big deal, its pretty easy..you'll need a steering wheel puller and a another tool that preeses the locking plate allowing you to take off the retaining ring and put it back on.Can't think of the name of it offhand though..

HUH???, don't make changing the turn signal **** harder than it has to.
With CRUISE CONTROL on you turn sig ****.
First thing you do is get underneeth your dash and find the small "whiteish" plug that goes up into your column.
Second you pull STRAIGHT out from the column your old turn sig handle.
Third, you pull gently on the cruise control/turn signal handle to verify you have unplugged the correct wires.
Fourth. Tie a string very well to the plug going up into the column. Tape the string to the end as well to make it less likely to snag on something on the way out.
Fifth, pull the wires out.
sixth, attach string to new turn singnal *** wires. Tie & tape
Seventh pull back through, plug in, and reassemble everything.
That easy.
W/O Cruise
IF you do not have cruise, you just need to pull straight out and plug in the new handle.
UNLESS YOU BROKE THE SWITCH INSIDE, which is unlikely, but possible, then you will have to take the column apart.

Yeah, that method sounds like it would work without having to pull the wheel off. I just got done swapping steering columns from my wrecked '84 Camaro (standard wipers/no cruise) into my stolen and recovered '87 TA (intermittant wipers/cruise control), so I got pretty familiar with every part of the upper end of the steering column. At least that method will work if it is just the lever assembly that is broken. If the actual electric switch that it sticks out of has gone bad (less likely...maybe we can tell if you post your symptoms), then you will actually have to open up the steering column. Not all that difficult, but can be frustrating at times.
