Looking at a 91 Z28 Convertible...

Hello all, i used to be a thirdgen user when i hat my 92 RS... but i moved on to a vette and then to a 98 formula.... but... now that i realize all those are peices of **** and my camaro was the best thing i ever had, i am looking at a 91 z28 convertible. it is white exterior with a black top, the top looks new. i never owned a convertible before. first of all, the car has 82,000 miles on it and the person selling it is the original owner, all hiway miles. he is asking 6500, im probly gonna talk him down to 5500. is that a decent price, the exterior and interior look great, one thing though. this car does not have the groun effects like my 92 did , with the sidefenders with the cool vents in them and stuff. was this car supposed to have this? is this car a L98? if so, whats the horsepower/torque? can i pop a LT4 in it?

Also, how does the top open up, is it electronic? or do i have to have 2 people to push it into the trunk like a vette? Can i fit bass tubes it the car? does it have a trunk or the small hatch like my coupe did?

Thanks
-Dan

Car: 85 IROC-Z / 88 GTA
Engine: 403 LSx (Pending) / 355 Tuned Port
Transmission: T56 Magnum (Pending) / T5
Axle/Gears: 3.42 / ?
If it's a 91 of ANY style (i.e. RS or Z28) it should have the exact same ground effects as your 92 did.

The car would not be an L98. It would be either an L03 (i.e. a pig) or an LB9.

IF it's really a Z, and IF it's got the right ground effects, $6500 sounds like a good price. I have yet to find an IROC 'vert in good shape for that much or less.

That sounds like a decent price, When I start looking at a car, I go to autotrader.com and do a search on the car I am interested in. Usually there is a few in there in similar condition that I can compare prices.

Try these Sites for prices:

www.edmunds.com
www.autotrader.com
www.nada.com

Looked at a 92T/A Conv with 89k the dealer was going to "sacrifice" for $3000. The top had to be replaced, the whole left side looked like someone had ran it lightly down a guard rail. And the Whole front end was off center. Other than the $6000 to fix everything it looked good. (hehe Just kidding)

That sounds reasonable though

keep in mind a new top will eventually cost you $1000

the top is manual, one person can usually do it though.

I bought my car, a 1998 IROC convertible a few weeks ago with 98k miles, majority of them being highway miles, with a new top just 3 years ago and needing only some minor repairs, biggest of them being the replacement of the belt tensioner for $4300. It's in good shape, def not mint but I'd say it's in excellent shape for a 13 year old car and has the normal wear and tears that a car takes over that span. Anyways 5500 IMO isn't a bad price at all considering how rare these cars are and that no one wants to sell them. And also the top is a cinch to fold down and I usually do it myself. You just reach ur arm across to the other side or just walk around to the other side of the car but it's really easy once u get the hang of it

Car: 90 RS 'Vert, 88 IROC-Z, 88 Firebird
Engine: 305 ci tbi, 305 ci tpi, 350 ci tpi

Axle/Gears: 3.45, 3.27, 3.27
Top operation: The top is manually operated. To lower it: 1. Lower the windows a bit. 2. Pull the tonneau pin release by reaching in on drivers side to the sliding release. 3. Pull the rear window part of the top forward until it rests on the top. 4. Reach through the drivers side door to trip the tonneau release switch on the center console between the electric winsow switches (Firebirds and later Camaros have the switch more conveniently located next to the tonneau pin release). 5. The tonneau will electrically release by solenoids and swing back. 6. Release the two latches at the header bar. 7. Lower the rear portion of convertible top and lower the remaining portion from the front. It tucks under the space behind the rear seats and below the tonneau. The rear window will fold in half and each section will stack and fold up as well. 8. Make sure that the top is safely tucked in. 9. Close the tonneau cover. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't once you get used to it. It takes me about 45 seconds to lower mine. It is a one man operation. Enjoy the 91 Z28 'vert. The price seems fair.

yeah, shouldn't take much time at all...one man operation. That sounds like a good deal to me. I have less than that in mine, but it isn't a z.
