its pretty common for them to strt rotting there behind the inner liner in the bottom corner. the good thing is that its a easy patch to do

So would I just remove the affected area and weld a little sheet over it?

I would cut or grind out the rust and maych it up with a piece of sheet metal not just patch over it as it will just get worse. The rust needs to be cut out
