Maybe you counld use some plastic or vinyl dye on the inside and outside of the yellow and clear parts. I guess that would be the cheapo way. Or just bust 'em out and wrap some of that tailight repair tape around it! he he

that is actually what i am working on doing to my IROC grids masking each of them off and painting them with red model transparent paint, the guys at work are helping me, when i get it done i will post a few pics. and since my car is red, i think it will look hidden just a little detail that i like.
and since my reverse lights dont work i am not worried about that.
good idea though

yeah, Rare-Roc-Z has the right idea. the flamin Z has the grid style ones all red, just painted over them with the translucent brandywine stage of his kandy kote paint job. I'm gonna try doing this by first fabricating a set of clear grid lenses, then paint them red, should look better that way since the turn signal area won't have a slight amber tint to it. I have another idea for it too, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up until I get a finished product.

when i first tested that a long time ago on a spare lense i used a red sharpie marker..worked too. i actually cut the marker open and used the inside thing as a brush..looked cool..

I suggest get lexan and dying that and then cut it down to the size you need. you can make a new tail light lens out of the stuff.

Man guys like you keep Thirdgens Alive and make em look newer and unique ...what a style is that ...really cool¡¡¡it looks like you have to re do the wiring...well my idea is to rewire as it follows:
when park lights are on..all bulbs are lightin...when you brake or turn..they get brighter....My idea is just like a 77 TRANS AM....i made a custom mode to my 82...i put some 89 formula taillights and when i brake 2 bulbs light and when you parklights all are lighted up...i added an extra bulb....but i shaved the separate turn light and blacked out it..my original idea was to all 4 bulbs light when you brake but a little cable under the dash burned..so i have to done it with 2 ..look my pics at

good luck and see ya soon¡

Yeah, my thought is that when the light shines through you'll see the difference since it's passing through amber then red.

I did this to my car a while ago. I didn't do the white section though. I don't need any more hassle with the cops. My car is black and I think it looks really good. And I can't see any amber tint when the light is shining through. I'll see if I can get some pics if anyone is interested.

Pretty cool, but I think the tail lights from the 82-85 style with the bar in the middle would look the best with the solid red

i did the same mod with my stock (black bar in middle) tails and my iroc tails but instead of just painting the amber section with candy apple red translucent, I put a coat on the stock red part, so the colors match perfect. the former amber section does have a bit of a oranish cast w/ the turn sigs on, but I remedied that by replacing the lights in the brakelight with amber ones, so they all match. I'm kinda iching to put the iroc tails back on now, but the dr. side is cracked and i need a new lense for it. they both look great, but the rev. light on the stockers looks too WHITE and the iroc lenses aren't as white in the rev. lense section and thus look a little bit better. go for it, but trust me here when I say to leave the clear clear, but paint the amber red.

to do this all you need to do is go to a hobby store and buy a spray can of "Translucent Candy Apple Red" and go at it. it's quite simple, just mask off the white section and paint both the factory red and the amber. give the red a coat or two, but the amber 3-4 coats. take your time and don't touch the tails till they are dry you will love the results.

I did the brake and amber section on my car. On top of the candy apple red, i sprayed the entire rear light with smoke tint to give it some smoke out to it. Ontop of it all, I put clear coat on it. You can get all this stuff from you local hobby store. Soon as I scan my pics, I'll post. Payce.

What would be really cool if you did your taillights like the Flamin' Red Killer Z is to get a flasher setup out of a 60's Mercury Cougar and hook it up so that the lights flash starting at the inside and proceeding to the outside in series when you turn on the turn signals. Imagine what it would look like when you turn on your 4-ways

We don't need to fabricate those, we can just dye them red with paint.

What if you just black out your backup lights. So it looks like that last pic but with out the bowtie. How effective would that be?

I have my entire tail light blacked out (everything except the license plate light that is) with VHT Night Shades spray on black out, and I've never had any problems with the law. On a recent trip to Indy I had a deputy sheriff pull me over to check my blackouts, and since the spray tint lets the reflective panel on the tail lights shine through he said they were legal, apoligized for pulling me over, and sent me on my way.

I never catch hell from the police as when I was younger I did that police ride along 3 years in the row, and my uncle is in the 4th, so I made it my duty to be buddies with all the cops and know how they work.

ohhhh, I thought you meant actually BLACK them out, as in with opaque black paint like i have shown. I'm sure if you used the niteshades paint you wouldn't have a problem like people were saying

Redraif just redid her taillights on the Firebird; the amber part is now red. After a lot of experimentation on some extra (broken) lenses, she found that using VHT red Metal Tint on the back of the amber part looked just like the red on the rest of the taillight. She tried Testors Candy Apple Red model spray paint first, but it looked kind of cloudy. We don't have pics of this up yet, but it does really look cool, without being "obviously" being modified to the non-third gen crowd.
