You can but it is highly advisable not to. Stress fractures can occur in the frame and it also weakens your roof.

I've asked this before and people seem to agree that it would be a better idea just to get a t-top car. I've heard aftermarket t-tops are loud, and it does weaken the frame but you can get sub frame connectors to help with that. It would be very expensive and I decided it wasn't worth it so I'm happy with my non t-top car.

I have aftermarket T-Top install back in 1990 for $2500. Today you can get a whole car with t-top for $2500. You have to ask yourself is it worth it. I would under stand it if you bought the car brand new and did alot of mods to your car.

Rolling a thirdgen would be damn hard to do... especially under normal circumstances... Even in Nascar racing you don't see it too much anymore.

Maybe if it was some odd situation...

My 2 cents.

I rolled in a car before,at 90 mph actually and got 2000 stitches,i guess that is why i have that fear, but the car was a POS cavalier and my friend was drunk went off the road at 90mph with a doanut on the car and hit a culvert pipe and launched, can you say DUMBA$$?,but luckily i walked away even with my face and the rest of my body all tore up,i even pulled his drunk a$$ from the car,as always he wasn't hurt as the driver usually never is but i was thrown from the car and got fu*&ed up,it taught me a lesson although, dont drink and drive or drive with a drunk.

I hate my T-tops...well, I don't HATE them. I just don't like the idea of them. Squeaky, leaky, flimsy-car-making POSs. I do use them though, when the weather is nice. I'll be damned if I'm not gonna use them if I HAVE TO have them

as for rolling a car. You're much more likely to roll a street car on the open road (what with all the ditches, trees, rocks, etc) than you are of rolling a racecar on a closed course. Comparing NASCAR to driving a streetcar...GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
lol

If I could come across a comparable 5 speed car to mine I'd trade it for a non-Ttop car in a HEARTBEAT...anyone, anyone?

I agree, the roads can be hazardous, especially since in Nascar you dont have to worry about deers and other animals jumping in front of you, rolling a streetcar can be done easily and is usually caused by hitting the ditch and going off road or other objects in your way.

around $2500 just for the t-top conversion, then sub frame connectors for around $100 plus $50 bucks to install, then you would still need a type of roll bar on the inside because the car would cave in under stress.....so figure $900 for that; add it all up and you could buy another car!

o yeah, did i mention the repaint for your car so that it wouldn't look like a pos with the paint all messed up.....there's another $2500 at it's cheapest!

so figure a safe $6,000 and that's if you get a deal!

but it would be nice, specially in these 91,92 350s

I would have broke my neck if my tops woulda been on my car... instead it was just my nose. Damn telephone poles just jump in the way, I swear

Anyways I wonder... what is the big deal, there is a person out there with a non t-top car that wants them for every other person that has t-tops and don't. They all talk about can I switch? Yeah it's simple... Trade each other cars.

As far as the Ttops being the majority of the rattles, that is just plain wrong. There are a lot of rattles inherent in the 3rd gens, the Ttops *could* be one of them. Replace the weather seal, and adjust the locking mechanism and the Ttops don't squeak anymore. Sounds too simple to say they suck and to not enjoy them because of that!

OK here is my two cents on t-tops.

They are cool. Thats all. The only thing cooler is the removable hardtop on the vette. Now You get the coolness of a convert but without all that annoyance. As long as the car is properly maintained a leak and noise is minimal. Especially compared to that of a convert. Now is it for everyone.... No. But i like it. ITS THAT COOL.

Put freakin sub fram connectors on your car then tell me if the t top dont suck. It makes the body weak and has pronounced flex. Can't u understand that. Why do u think GM did not put 5 speeds with these cars or t tops with 350's after 1990?

DONT DO IT!!!

I have aftmkt. t tps from a company calle Cars & Concepts out of florida.

to make a long story short, they went out of buisiness after someone flew out the t tps in an accident and sued.

I dont worry about that b/c I am a safe driver but the amt. of flex they caused was unbelievable. factory t top cars had extra bracing and that didnt really work that well. I got SSM weld ins and that helped alot but if I had it all to do over again Id get a GTA hardtop.

Just need to vent a little here...

I always love the posts where someone bitches about how bad t-tops are, t-tops are noisy, they are dangerous, if I roll my car I am gonna die wih a glass roof and so on. Well here are some truths about t-tops.

1. If you really want them, then DO sel your car and buy one with t-tops. It is way too much money/hassle to have them installed after the fact.
2. T-tops do not leak and do not make excessive amounts of noise if you take the time to replace your weatherstripping and tighten the locking areas. My tops used to leak and make noise, but then I replaced my weatherstripping and just did some basic tightening and realigning of the locking brackets and now they are basicaly rattle free..I say basically because they do rattle when you go over large bumps, but they are glass so get over it!

3. I love it when people moan about how their huge horsepower engnes are going to twist their car lke a pretzel. Just put some SFC's on your car and upgrade your suspension components and you will do fine with that 500 horse motor you have waiting to "drop in". The newer F-bods have t-tops and drop tops and they have almost double our stock horsepower, so I dont think it is a huge deal like so many make it out to be.

Basically, t-tops are pretty good. If you sit there and ***** that they are bad.....then you need to get off your as! and replace those components that are 15 years old so that they dont suck! It is no different than someone with TBI base model Firebird complaining about how "slow" thirdgens are....no offense to anyone who owns a TBI bird...I owned one too, I just used it for an example.
