How did you try to paint them? From what I was told you need to dye them. Check out this post and scroll down to sheet out of luck message:

I repainted many of my interior pieces. I didn't have anything fance, just a rag and a can of spray paint. Wipe it off shake VERY WELL and spray. Its been 2 months and they look gorgeous. I used charcoal gray, it has sparkels in it when the lgiht falls on it at a certain angels. Looks kick @ss.

it's actually a paint/dye combo, many companies make interior plastic/vynl paints & dyes. In that link pookey gave I gave pretty detailed instructions, but if you have any more questions feel free to email me at richierich81@peoplepc.com
An ammended procedure I've bene using is to wipe with tack cloth if needed, wash the pannels with warm water, wipe with rubbing alchohol, then plastic prep, then the adhesion promoter then paint. Works like a dream.
P.S. Pookey: Kleen-Strip Makes the Bulldog adhesion promoter if you haven't been able to find it

yah id go with some of that plastic/vinyl spray. i bought a bunch of plastic interior parts from the junk yard and brought them back to life with that spray. i thought about getting new ones but after looking through catalogs either the prices were too high or the parts had to be painted to match the interior anyway. but then thats just my small thought

Truthfully, I would look on ebay. I got a great deal with pretty much the plastic interior pieces I needed, besides the dash, and consoles. I paid $150 and they are black and in mint condition. They were pulled from a '91 TA. I cannot wait to put them in my car, but I am waiting for my seats and rug to come in. Just be patient, and look. By the way, I helped my friend paint the plastic interior pieces in his rustang. They came out really nice. We used a coat of clear gloss at the end. I would first try to paint the pieces, and if you dont like the look then buy used ones. Buying them new is just too damn expensive. Good luck.

I tried painting my plastic grey pieces black. I cleaned them, dealer gave me a can of plastic prep, then I painted them. Looked awesome but flaked easily. I did not know about that adhesion promoter, that's probably why it flaked.
In the end, I ended up buying all the black plastic interior pieces from a wrecked Camaro at a local yard for $50.00.
Now all I need is a new black T-top headliner and door panels.
