cup holders on the door
I recently got a set of the door mounted cup holders that were on the later thirdgens (92?). Any tips on putting them on my 88? Are their existing mounting holes behind the door panel? Do I need special hardware ... I only have the cupholders. Thanks

Kurt88IROC, do a search and see if you can come up with anything. I remember a post about this several months ago - where someone had put the '91-92 door cup holders in an earlier 3rd gen.
Unfortunately, I have no info to help you with. I bought one of those plastic console peices from walmart ($2.96) and put it between the rear seats. It sits pretty nice and is not too hard to reach.

The 3 mounting holes are in the door already. You will need 3 push-in plastic anchors for the screws, screws, and plastic screw-covers if you don't want it to look like a band of gypsy's put it in. Just go to your GM parts dept and have them look up the interior door diagram for a 92 'bird. You'll see the hardware I'm talking about. Also get some new door panel retainers (they're cheaper at a parts store) and a removal tool (don't use a screw-driver, If you're gonna do the job do it like you give a damn). Remove the door panel. Insert the anchors and line up where the holes for the screws are (transcribe by measuring) and then install everything. PRESTO.

drain89, thanks for the help! I figured that there was something like an anchor piece. The holes are way to big for just screws. Go to the Chevy dealer ... now why didn't I think of that? I guess I wasn't thinking. Thanks again.

My '92 has those cupholders. They aren't bad, actually. I like the fact that they are low and deep. My Dunkin Donuts coffee [medium size, regular please] doesn't spill in the corners. And, if it did spill, it would only get on the carpet since it's located so low.
Two warnings: make sure you put the cup in the holder AFTER you close the door. Obvious, I know, but you can see how it could happen. And, never use the cupholder (or storage compartment to which it's attached) as a door pull - it's cheap plastic and you'll at least rip the screw holes if not the entire unit right off the door!
