HI EVERYONE!! NEW MEMBER AND Z OWNER FROM VA. I'M POSTING IN THE BODY SECTION BECAUSE I DONT SEE AN INTRO OR OFF TOPIC SECTION.

ANYHOW, JUST BOUGHT A 87 IROCZ 305/AUTO. ITS IN AWESOME SHAPE EXCEPT FOR THE PEELING PAINT, INTERIOR IS MINT, ALL THE ELECTRICAL WORKS AND THE DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION FEELS NEW. ITS GOT 155K ON IT. ALL STOCK AND NOT HACKED UP, JUST THE WAY I LIKE MY CARS TO START.

I'LL BE STRIPPING THIS ONE AND PAINTING IT BACK ALL STOCK IN MY HOME GARAGE ... I'LL POST PICS ALONG THE WAY. NO, I WILL NOT BE USING RUSTOLEUM AND A ROLLER !!

Thanks glad to be here!! I really love this car so far, I'm 45 and never owned an IROC... always wanted one when they were new... I had a 69 Camaro for a few years, but just a 307 so that doesnt really count. Looked nice tho.

The Nova has a 396 (not stock) and I've had it for almost 20 years. Repainted it over the summer, jambs and all.

I recognize that nova from autobody101. You're going to like having an IROC, they're allot of fun once you fix the problems. Fuel pumps and injectors are common replacement items. Paint is another.

EDIT: What color are you going to paint your camaro? Never mind, I see you are going to paint it stock. I'm sure it will look good regardless. Are you painting the stripes on?

I love the IROC, so far...found out today its got the special handling option with the wonder bar. This will be my winter project, I'm not registering it yet. The guy I bought it from, a full time mechanic and IROC fan (has several), bought it for his son to drive, after they got the car they found another with a 350 and better paint, son really wanted a 350. Doesnt matter to me, I just wanted a cheap, good running project that just needed paint. Anyway, it must have been a little rough mechanically when he got it, he's done a ton of maintenance and tune up work to it, runs great! Idles smooth, no smoke or blowby and good power, tranny feels good and handling and steering feels tight, all electrical is working.

Can't wait to get going on it.

Yeah, definitely going back stock on the color... I think that the car is so original otherwise that it would be a mistake to change the color.

I havent thought about the stripes yet...might look cleaner without... will have to wait n see

Dude.....where are you in VA? What is your average price to do a paint job? My car is the same color but a t-top car.

Oh, and my car has a straight body so there will be very, very little bodywork needed.

Nice Iroc and even better Nova. I had a kinda nice 72 Nova last year and sold it-miss it evey day and it was just a mild 307 LOL! If the Iroc turns out like the Nova you will have one killer looking Z. Welcome to the site as well.

Got my booth cleaned out today and still sanding away on the IROC. Maybe epoxy primer tomorrow...will see how it goes. 34 hours in it so far...

Looks good but i have a few questions.how big is the garage you are painting in? and what do you do to keep the fumes from entering the house? I want to paint mine, but i am afraid of the smell in the house( not for me personally, but for the wife and kids)

Sure, its a 12X22 in the basement. I have an exhaust fan where the back door used to be and two filtered air intakes on the wall that separates the two garages. Doesnt take long for the cloud to be sucked right outside. The room I paint in is sealed off from the rest of the house with steel exterior doors and weatherstripping... not saying you don't catch a wiff of the smell every now and then when Im working on something. Last night for instance, I was sanding some body filler without the fan running and I could smell it upstairs. I would worry more if it was a full time thing, but we're just talking a couple cars a year. I actually like to work outside as much as possible.

I will be looking into getting a low overspray gun when I do the color and clear though... the HF gun sprays great but makes a big cloud and wastes alot of paint. I'm looking at a LVLP gun that was recommended to me.

Thanks guys, I actually got most of one side block sanded with 320 tonight. My plan, after I get the whole body sanded with 320 is to touch up some low spots and minor imperfections with filler and then spray 2 more wet coats of epoxy primer on everything. After that cures, I'll block it out with some 600 and it will be ready for the base/clear. Probably looking at 3-4 weeks out for some color and clear.

Body is very straight as is, very little work will be needed to get it ready for paint from here out. Have about 50 hours in the car right now.

Pics are right after I sprayed the primer Sunday.

If you've never used a real HVLP paint gun- you will love the paint savings- you still can get clouds when spraying the clear though....just not as bad- the high pressure guns i have DO make for a smoother clearcoat. of course everything gets color sanded now anyway. Nice work in a small garage!

Yeah, the HF gun says HVLP on the handle but sprays at 45psi...its definitely a conventional...and I love the way you can pound the paint on with it but the overspray is horrendous... Will definitely be getting the low overspray gun soon.

Your right about the colorsanding...painting in a garage, you pretty much better plan on sanding and buffing everything because of dust nibs...sometimes I have better luck than other times but 99% gets sanded/buffed away... Its time consuming, but its nice to get peoples reactions when you tell them it was painted in the garage

i painted my 62 caddy in my garage before i had a shop. My HVLP gun continiously blew air ...so as you walked around the car you had to be careful which way it was pointed...well i went to spray the trunk lid and the air blew all the crud that was sitting on top of one of the garage door sections-right into the trunk paint! when i did my shop in my barn i bought an overhead door that was smooth !

Thats funny that you mention that, I had the same thing happen when I primed the decklid on the Camaro... Need to clean that door when I start putting the good stuff on the car!!

I bought a LVLP gun tonight, based on the recommendation from a friend from my Nova site. He has an Iwata also and says he never would have bought it if he had this one first. Gonna try it out on the next round of primer.

If you intend to primer it again, may I suggest blocking it with 180. It'll do the same thing in half the time. One other thing, Google guide coat. The $.99 spraybomb at wallyworld works fine. You don't need the expensive stuff.

Good info, Thanks. I actually am using a guide coat...the pics were taken right after primer was sprayed.

I was considering the 180, but I was worried about possible shrinking later...probably nothing to worry about, but temps are not ideal this time of year and I don't want to take any chances... I have plenty of time and I dont mind sanding. I think I went over the Nova about 1000 times LOL

Im kinda curios to see how the lvlp gun works out. I have been using the higher end HF gun and it lays down paint smooth it just has lots of overspray. Plus that gun would be easier on my compressor.

I'll definitely let you know. I have the $35 HF gun also, and I agree with what you are saying...Its not bad for painting a couple fenders etc. for example, but spraying a whole car, the overspray is a bit ridiculous, not to mention all the expensive paint being wasted.
