I installed a power antenna. It is a PITA. I had to cut metal and bend it to make room for the whole unit. If I had to do it again I would get one of those remote motor ones. If you get the one with the motor on it trust me, you'll need to do some metal cutting, no way around it. If you don't mind cutting metal then remove the front tire and the plastic inner fender to make it a little easier.

I also had to cut metal away for my power antenna, but this is only true if you go aftermarket. GM sells power antennas for our cars that dont require any fabrication. The motor is mounted really low so it will fit. The only prob is that they only come in chrome. I wanted a black one.

Those antennaes look pretty good. Has anyone installed them on their cars? I think that would be a pretty easy mod to do. A power antennae would deffinitely clean up the look of the car.

I think some of the GTA's came with power antennas. I always thought it would be nice to have one, but it looked like a pain to install. I looked in the Classic Industries catalog, and they have a little antenna that just sits where you put it. It looks about the size of the cigarette lighter (?) and just has a cable going to it from the radio. I think it was around $60 or so. If anyone has tried this, how well does it work? I think any f-body would look better minus the antenna sticking up. Might even gain .000000003 seconds on your ET due to better aerodynamics!

Just orderd the whole assembly last night through gmpartsdirect.com. This was to replace the one in my 88GTA. The # was 22048583, cost was $46.59. I verified this part # though 3 different places, gmprts emailed me the same #. Hope its right. Replaced once in an 86 awhile back. Piece of cake one you get the wheel and inside plastic fender off. Hint, before you start, buy some extra plastic fasteners for the plastic inside fender (tend to break).

Does that require running the antenna wire and etc. through the firewall and misc. or does the cable and wires disconnect at the antenna for a swap over?

Yes does the install require me to go run wires through the firewall?

The wires from the factory run through the side kick panel. There is also a relay mounted behind the knee trim on the pass side. Thats all I know about it.

Yep, the relay's for turning on the power antenna. Factory setups had one pink wire going to the radio, when that wire got +12 volts, it turned on the relay. The relay has two three-pin connectors on it. One is the "radio side", with the pink wire, and a wire to ground. The other side has three wires (this is by memory, so...) white, green, and gray. One shoots over to the fuse block to get power. The other two go to the power antenna.

As an aside, has anyone ever checked into installing a window mount antenna? I once had a 77 Impala that had the antenna embedded into the windshield and a lot of GM's cars (Grand Prix, Intrigue, etc.) come with antennas embedded within the rear window (looks like part of the rear window defrost system, hardly notice they're there). In my experience, these antennas seem to have much superior reception in comparison to the shaft units and you never have to worry about them getting broken off.

Update on that ant assembly I ordered. That part # was for the mast only. Three different dealerships gave me that same #. Waiting for a response from gmparts on correct # so I can return and get this job finished. Need to find a parts # book or something. :

Very odd. I did not have to cut any metal when I replaced my power antenna. I bought a used one at a Pull A Part for $10 and went thru the kick panel and wheel well without having to cut any metal at all.

The problem with having it in the rear defrost is that whenever you turn on your rear defrost, your radio reception is diminished. That is just my experience with a friend's Grand Prix. To have it done you would need a custom made hatch glass, and I can't even imagine how much that would cost.

I don't have a part number but I did have to cut metal to get the motor to mount. Wires weren't the problem, just the tip top of the motor. If it had a lonter shaft then it would have worked no prob. I'm thinking if it's $50 for just the shaft then it's going to be over $150 for the whole unit. GM always screws us like that, oh well. Just get the remote mounted motor and there will be no problems.

Ok guys, Finished install today. Forgot how clean it looked with the antenna down. Correct # for complete antenna with motor is #22062580. You will also need to order a bracket #22038182. Gmpartsdirect.com. Parts plus shipping and handling came to $120.26.

I had been looking to install a power antenna until I read a post the other day about an "invisible" antenna sold by Radio Shack for about $4.99. Several people have tried it out and it seems to work great. The antenna is basically a thin wire that is applied along the edge of the windshield where it is practically unnoticeable.
Those who have used it say they get great reception in both AM and FM. I think it is worth consideration especially when looking at the difference in price and installation time. Someone said it only took a half-hour.
You can see it at Radio Shack's site at: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=12%2D1325
If that doesn't work, the product number is 12-1325
Admittantly, I would like to do the power install just because I like gadgets and was planning to put in a semi-automatic antenna with a switch but I like the low cost of the "invisible" type.
Hope this is of some use.

Easy install. Only thing you have to cut is three wires. Cut them close to the old antenna so you have enough wire to work with when you splice them into the harness on the new one. Make sure you soder the splices. If you don't have a sodering gun, get the shrink tube wire connecters with the soder in them. It is a tight fit, however the fender does not need to be messed with. Just take your time and work it out of the fender area. Once wiring is spliced, check to make sure it works before installing. Also before putting inner fender piece back on, check to make sure antenna extends out of the top of the fender straight. Can be adjusted some on lower bracket. By the way, you don't have to disconnect the battery, just unplug the antenna harness from relay behind the pass. side knee trim panel. Also make sure you buy some replacement plastic fasteners before starting to reattach plastic inside fender piece to your fender. Any auto parts store will have them. 1 1/2 - 2 hour job MAX.
