Looking for the best black body paint.
Looks like firebirds were code 8555 black or starting in 86 0848, which I think is tuxedo black.
I'll be using ppg base/clear. What do you think looks best? Black is hard to see differences of shade. Looking at some on line photos I'm leaning towards the earlier black.

Ok, maybe that was too specific.
What color black did you paint your car? Mostly interested in non metallics GLOSS black. Please keep the flat or satin black pics out of this thread.

I had it painted in the original 8555 black. I think it is nice because it is a pure black. No metallics or anything like that. Just black.

Nice, that's what I was looking for. Any pics? Base/ clear or single stage?
Anyone think the 0848 is better? Are they too close to tell any difference?

PPG DBC 9700. Forget the paint codes.
Stay away from Omni black, it has a brown hue.
The GM 8555 may not have any paint tints added, but you can check with your local auto paint supplier.

According to paintref.com it's the same as 8555
Did you paint your car this color? If so, which primer and sealer did you use?

If you want a nice black paint job, I suggest PPG K36 primer or K200 for high build primer. Then use PPG DP Epoxy Primer/sealer in black. The DP can be used on bare metal or as a sealer after the primer before the base coat. Then use DBC 2021 Clear. These are all products I have used in the past with great results. Its not cheap and i'm sure someone will chime in with products they prefer.

Ah, gotcha.
I've used the deltron but not with that clear coat , looks like a good choice according to the data sheets.
Thanks for the specific primer codes, good tips.
You are right, the deltron stuff isn't cheap, but the support is really good, especially since my local shop is a dealer. We save so much money painting our cars ourselves, seems silly to skimp on the paint.

I did use the 2020 clear, but they revised it to the 2021. I painted my camaro in 96 and the paint still looks wet after washed and dried. Just watch out for any shrinkage with the primers. It will show sand marks if you don't use the correct grit or give it time before block sanding. I have always had good luck with Deltron base coat. The cheaper line Omni is Ok for a car you are going to sale, but the black doses come off brown when sprayed next to the 9700.
