Here is a photo of my engine from my 1967, after I got done detailing it. It looked liked goats lived in it when I started - wet goats at that. I did all this with the engine STILL in the car.

What would you like to know?

Hi Scott - thanks for the compliment. Responding to you and Mike: I did not want to remove my engine from the car to detail it. It runs great, even with 125,000 on it, and it was the beginning of summer and I didn't want to lose any cruising time. So I chose to detail the engine in the car.

The first thing you do is remove and label everything (unless you've got a photographic memory). The valve covers were flaked and pitted, so I hand-sanded those. With everything removed I was able to hand-sand the block. With the block sanded, I shot it with high-temp engine primer (critical, otherwise the paint will flake off).

I waited 48 hours, then shot it with Plasti-kote Fast-Dry Engine Enamel, Pontiac Metallic Blue, No. 227. I did this four years ago, it hasn't begun to flake off yet. Regarding the color, some have said the actual Pontiac metallic engine blue from this era engine had a very slight greenish tint to it. My understanding, borne out by my experience, is that the color is correct - over time and use, the blue tends to get cooked by engine heat, which is why over time they changed color slightly. In other words people who think the correct color was blue with a green tint were looking at engines that had some miles on it and the color had faded.

I used yards of masking tape and several sunday newspapers. I had old color photographs of what the correct colors were for everything, and what I didn't know I asked at the firstgenfirebird listserv. I was able to paint the firewall for example with, I believe, a proper semi-flat.

I want to point out that this is a driven car -I took that photo after putting many miles on the car following the detailing. Once you get it to look like this, it's much easier to keep it this way! The hardest aspect of keeping it looking this way is the crud that accumulates in the valley pan, it's a known aspect of Pontiac engines that they seem to ooze oil and crud from their pores.

Car: 86 iroc
Engine: 305
that 86 iroc is gonna be alot harder to do with the engine in the car.the older cars have half the stuff on the firewall and fenders.I have a 86 iroc and have been thinkin about doing this for a while.I am gonna remove what i can easily and cover the rest. Its gotta look better then it does now.The only problem will be down beside the motor, around the steering box, etc.

Mine is an 84 and carbed. I did mine with the engine out of the car over the winter 6 years ago. I took everything pretty much down to bare metal and painted the frame and firewall with POR15 and the rest is primered and painted. I suppose a little overboard, but I like it.

I just had to compliment you guys on those engines, they're downright inspiring. I'm thinking about swapping engines in the late summer, and after what I've just seen, I'll definately clean, restore, and repaint the bay while it's empty.

Where did you get your chrome hood latch mechanism and where did you get that <guessing aluminum> polished aluminum air deflector that covers the entire radiator. I have a 92 and would absolutely LOVE to have one like yours.

Thanks

Do you happen to have a drawing that has the measurements for the chrome hood latch wrap-around thing (dont know what to call it). I would love to have something similar! Awsome job on the engine bay!

Sorry I don't have the measurements for the latch panel cover and the rad. hold down. I had those pieces custom fabbed at J & B Microfinish. There is a link to their site on my web page. You could always email him and ask him if he saved the info. I'm laid up right now, but as soon as I can I will measure them and post it back here. The hood latch is just the original--chromed at the Chrome Shop (also a link on the page)

Great cars both of you guys. If I ever mange to track down all my leaks, I'll get my engine compartment cleaned up too. That way, I won't have to be embarrase when I open the hood.

Bird 67.. I believe that is the correct color, i read about that pain in High Performance Pontiav awile back. I used the same paint on my 69 GTO. 66 is the first year of that color i believe because i also have a 65 which is more blue/green with no metalic.

I have located a photo of my engine before it was detailed. I will try to get it scanned next week and post it here. It's a pretty "before vs. after" image.

My engine is nowhere as impressive as Les's or Bird67's but for no body work or painting experience I got my engine looking like that after a month or so worth of work. I got some of it down to the bare metal where it was starting to rust, but for the most part it was primered and painted. The picture helps cover up a lot of the blemishes, though. The engine paint is also starting to peel a bit, so I'd like to take it out and redo it when I swap the heads, cam, and converter. I didn't take it out when I cleaned it up in the first place.

LOL! Yeah, not only did it run, there's a funny story. My buddies are all Mopar freaks. They were giving me grief about buying a Pontiac. After I bought the car I needed a ride to go pick it up, about 1.5 hrs away. My buddies gave me a ride up in a Mopar minivan. The firebird, looking just like what you see above (that photo was one of a series I took when I first found the car in a chicken barn), ran great. On the way home, the Mopar minivan died - transmission failure. Good thing we had the reliable, 28-year-old Pontiac that hadn't run in 3 years as our safety vehicle! We abandoned the minivan and all piled in the Pontiac, made it home without a hitch.
