Anyone whose reupholstered their seats

I'm in the process of redoing my seats. I want it to look OEM so I'm using a light grey fabric that is a tad lighter than the grey in my car so I can die it easily to match 17yr-old cloth. Anyhow, I've gotten it all disassembled and now I am ready to reassemble but I can't figure out how these little black strips of fabric once fit in. Are they really needed or just useless piles of junk?

Thanks.

I believe you are talking about what is called "listings"

They should have a small plastic rope in one edge of them. What they are used for is actually attaching the fabric to the seat using "hog rings" The hog ring is a little "C" shaped piece of metal. It is placed through the black strips around the plastic rope and then around part of the metal frame of the seat, then basically squeezed together to hold it down.
I highly recommend getting a set of hog ring pliers. They make putting them in EXTREMELY easy. You can get them at any upholstery or most fabric shops.

I did my own seats but stopped after awhile because my perfectionism got the best of me. Feel free to email me at Wolfcoast@earthlink.net if you have any other questions. I do have some pics of my seats while I was redoing the upholstery.

Naw, I got those. This is on the bottom half of the front driver's seat. I'm having trouble sewing on the side pieces (sit vertical) onto the pieces where they go into the bucket but are the same color. Basically the stitch that sits on the edge on always gets torn on the drivers side. It had about 1/2" pieces of black fabric inbetween the pieces and I'm wondering if there was some complicated way it was sewn together.

The only black pieces I remember were on the bottom edges (AKA listings) to attach it and also there were some between the middle portion (where your butt actually sits) and the side bolsters next to them. What these were for is to slide over metal rods on the frame itself, then the metal rod was hog ringed to hold it down.
Try and post a pic or email me one so I can see exactly what you are talking about. I did finish my front seats and they came out fairly good.
